Both manual and automatic transmission are discussed here, including the clutch!

Its better than before, just still not good enough!
Its also lost the nasty over-centre action, which is good.

Gave it a damn good thrashing today too- its fine with standard power.

I wrote that quickly before i went to work, and didn't make myslef 100% clear, so I think i ought to add, to the casual reader, this is NOT a problem with rpruens ECU. The modded ECU is very good,(grin on face good :D ) it just appears that the early type clutch can't handle the power it eeks out of the engine.[/i]

Oh heck...

Maybe it will improve after some use. I mean the flywheel has to be worn a bit, so the plate could take a while to bed in, then same as brake pads.

Hopefully that may help.

I have just stumbled onto this thread, and all i can say is you should have used a volvo original double sprung clutch!!!!

The black diamond can't hand the torque of the tuned 480 engine or the R5 engines, the Renault 5 boys use the original clutch up to around 220 ft/lb torque.

After this figure it will slip, your only option then is to look at the Helix or AP Racing clutch.

But then i'm sure that Lee would have mentioned this info somewhere on earlier as this is common knowledge to us as we have seen this commonly with the R5 and his 480 with increased boost pressure.

Sigh.....only the later type is double sprung.... that being the problem. My flywheel can NOT take the later type clutch. The Clutch I took out was a genuine volvo, (had volvo on it) and it was not excessively worn, it simply was not strong enough.....

I need to fit a later type clutch, and to do that i would need to change to the later type flywheel, and also get a blue label ECU....hmmm rocking horse shit anyone?

in addition to this, euro car parts don't have a genuine kit listed for the earlier type.....and the genuine ones are more expensive than the black diamond one.
Damn, i never thought of looking at it that way, thanks.

Grrrrrrr.

Larger flywheel, later clutch and Red Label( ;) )ECU here we come then...

Note to anyone who changes their clutch in future, check the flywheel friction surface for trueness! kive and learn, live and learn....

EDIT: to add, didn't add this to the thread at the time, but subsequent inspection of the old friction plate revealed a non-circumferential wear pattern, ie worn more at some points and looked untouched in others, diagnosis flywheel uneven....

Did anybody try a clutch assembly from a Clio II RS?

The RS has an F4R engine.

the clutch diameter is 220/215mm and can cope with 180bHp

Or is the newer Turbo type just better?

Well since this thread is back again,

I whipped the engine out in September, (swapped it for mothers one, but thats another story) and changed the flywheel for the later 215mm one. Used a genuine Volvo/sachs friction plate and pressure plate.

I did NOT need to change the ECU, the car is running fine with the Orange label one.

Clutch has not slipped yet, and it better bloody not do either!

I don't think Richard's stage 1 mod will make a good condition 215mm clutch slip.
My old Steel Grey Turbo never ever slipped no matter how much oomph I gave it.
The new one (with same ECU) does slip, but as I bought it with 97k on the clock it could well still be on the original clutch!
