Both manual and automatic transmission are discussed here, including the clutch!

Clutch Cable needed 1987

Post by davekit » Sun Apr 27, 2025 3:38 pm

Does anyone know where I can get a clutch cable for an early RHD 480? Mine snapped today, so I had to get recovered.

The car is 1987 E-reg, chassis 513546, B18E engine.

Looking at the parts book, there are various cables for LHD and RHD, but it doesn't seem to list what I want, ie early RHD. Can anyone decifer it better than me?

Skandix only list one available cable for a 480 and that is for LHD. The cable for RHD is discontinued and has a number which is not in the parts book.
Ebay lists quite a few, but it is difficult to be sure of the correct one without the correct part number. The only other option might be for Speedy Cables to make one up - anyone tried them?

Only last August, the retainer for the cable broke (made my own replacement), so I seem to be doomed on the clutch front!!
Thanks in advance.

Supplementary information!

I've looked through the cables on ebay for 400-series and they all appear to be for LHD cars - even though many are UK stock! LHD cables seem to be listed as either ca.850mm long or ca.1000/750mm long. From my rough measurement a RHD cable needs to be ca.1400mm long.

I have however found some cables for 300-series which seem to be about the right length, and quite cheap. The end fittings look about right, so I will get my broken cable off to make a better comparison. Has anyone tried a 300-series cable on a 480?

Good solution and probably the only one you were going to get re-using the outer sheath and putting in a new inside. Nice one.

I was at lake autos breakers yard the other weekend and they had a new 480 in, it was a early one with the shorter clutch fork, could be worth giving them a call to see if it's still there!

Well this took a while to resolve, mainly due to me having a spell in hospital. Anyway, Speedy Cables came to the rescue (for the car, not me!). The outer cable was ok, so it just needed a new inner. That kept the cost down to something reasonable, and the cable is now fitted and working.

I would advise checking the routing of your clutch cable, as it looks my failure was due to it getting too close to the exhaust. The plastic coating on the inner cable had melted, so I guess the steel lost it's temper and snapped. All part of the learning curve!
