Auto Owners,do we need to clean/change Gearbox Filters.

Both manual and automatic transmission are discussed here, including the clutch!

There will be a strainer in the sump. I'ts worth cleaning every 50k miles or so. Normaly they are bolted to the bottom of the valve block, so you have to remove the sump to get to it. On older volvos it was on the 45k service list for replacement, but it's not anymore.

It is a good idea to take the sump off an auto box. You get a good idea about the condition of the box, and it will let you know if anything has got hot (look for discolured bits). It's also the only way to get all the sludge out of the bottom of the sump.

Note: Never use crappy rags to wipe the strainer / sump, clean, lint free only! Dirt is the seccond bigest killer of autos, heat being the first.

chris1roll, if you can, go to the partslist of number three, the control unit.
And show that too us.
The oilfilter is mounted on the control-unit.

On my red 480 the oilfilter was clogged completly, and the gearbox stopped working. This was after 145000km, 12 years.
