Volvo 480 Club Europe

Selected reverse, pop noise and some smoke. Turned off engine immediately. Smell of oil. Lots of engine oil on the ground, smoke was caused be oil on the exhaust. Jacked up car, auto gearbox is dry but rear of sump and steering rack is wet, reluctant to restart engine,
So I've jacked up the front of the car, engine idle's fine, tried selecting D and R but no movement from the front wheels, auto gearbox fluid is full any suggestions????

Could it be the oilfilled rear engine mount ruptured and put its oil on the exhaust? Have you checked the dipstick to see if engine oil really has made a bid for freedom?

lack of drive (fwd & reverse) does sound like an issue with thew auto box I had an old Scimmy with a slush box and it would try and select second and reverse at the same time due to clutch bands not engaging/disengaing correctly.

but start off simple things, check ALL fluid levels, engine, box, steering etc the 'pop' doesn't sound good

then worry further if all fluid levels are OK, auto gearboxes have a maze of plumbing to control the gears, nowt electronic!!
