Leaking Gearbox Oil Seal

Got the car back from MOT, with an advisory of 'Gearbox oil leak o/s/f inner gaitor seal'

In a short chat with friendly mechanic, I was told that this was a 'design fault' of these renault engines, it would continue to deteriorate and will eventually fail, and that there was nothing could be done. Is this true? Any ideas? I can't see a great deal of oil anywhere on the drive shaft..

I guess what I'm asking is, whether the oil seal on the gearbox is something that can be changed relatively easily, or if it is another £bottomless pit to pour money into? Anyone done this job?

Cheers!

Martin

If it's Offside or Driver's side to most people then it will be the Differential Oil seal.
Simply job to do but you need either a special tool or a piece or tube the correct diameter of the seal and record the depth of the old one so you can fit the new one to the right depth.
You'll have the remove the driveshaft, there's 2 roll pins holding it in. Need a punch to knock them out and some sealant or maybe thread lock will do, when refitting them, or get some new ones.

Got the same problem with Vera, my '93 S. But because of what is a growing list of engine gasket problems, I'll have to take her to a garage.
Any Renault/Volvo specialist should know what to do and it shouldn't be too expensive, 'bout an hours labour charge + parts and Gearbox oil
