Gear box linkage adjustment???

Post by johnd » Fri Oct 17, 2003 11:30 am

Ive been toying around with setting up the linkage rod/lever on my car as ive been getting a sticky 1st/2nd.....no probs here but...

Question is....Why when you are stationary and try 1st to 2nd and back, with the clutch down it is sweet as pie but when out driving sometimes it gets sticky and you need to put the clutch down again to get a better change? You park up....sweet as pie.

Doing my head in this one!!

Cheers

John

I have that occasionally, I think that I may be missing the gate perhaps, mostly it is very good.

... and mine does exaclty the same thing too. I keep meaning to have a look at adjusting it (just a look, to start with, and then think about actually adjusting it!).

Except I have had the linkage adjusted twice by Volvo dealers, and it made no difference...

I'm told that there may be a problem in the gearbox itself, but I don't have the bravery to attempt a repair...and Volvo service costs are not small :badmood:

I have a similar problem, but i'm suspecting the release mech on the clutch. So got to change it soon.

Same problem, Could be syncro's on the way out :cryhard: . Hope not though, if anyone figures it out PLEASE email me with solution. Reason I suspect syncro's is because selecting 1st/2nd is better if you get the revs up.

Cheers and all the best

I am thinking oil !!!!

Post by volvofox » Sat Oct 18, 2003 7:35 pm

I am thinking oil !!!!

some oils get different specs when hot. maybe. they filled the wrong one in the last time. maybe its time for a gearbox oil cleanup and change.

ask people about this idea?

I've got a suspicion it might be the gearbox oil too.... especially as it's really bad when the engine's cold, but once it's warmed up, I don't have any trouble finding 1st and 2nd. Also, possibly related, or possibly not, I always get a crunch when going into reverse (... and my clutch is adjusted properly) once the engine's warm. When it's cold, I can find reverse without it crunching at all. Strange?

May have found the problem guys....

Every so often the car rolls slightly of it's own accord...this in tandem with the 1st 2nd problem sounds like it could be a sticky clutch.

Anyone know how to un-stick a clutch???

Cheers

gearbox /clutch troubles

Post by dabac » Wed Nov 19, 2003 2:34 pm

I had trouble selecting gears for awhile, turned out to be one problem creating another. The clutch plate was worn, but not disastrously so. The throwout bearing on the other hand had more or less seized. Replaced the whole clutch. But the force needed to switch gears while driving with the sticky clutch caused the bushings in the gear linkage to fail, so gear selection was still bad until I got those replaced too. As spares goes the bushings are not very expensive, and can do wonders for the car's driveability.

Yup, this exactly what I have!
I'm pretty sure it's the release bearing, but to just replace this would be silly, so i'm doing the whole clutch on boxing day with my volvo twat mates. The mod will be aided by leftover christmas food and booze. Can't wait! You should try it too!
