Replacing clutch - can't get starter motor out

Both manual and automatic transmission are discussed here, including the clutch!

Replacing clutch - can't get starter motor out

Post by tms » Thu Dec 15, 2011 4:02 pm

My dad and I are trying to replace the clutch on my 1989 1.7 ES (B18E engine) based on the instructions in the Hayes manual (the "don't remove the engine" method).

We've got as far as removing all the bolts we can see / feel associated with the starter motor, but can't get it to budge. This time I've done anything major under the bonnet, so I might be missing something obvious.

Any ideas / hints on getting the starter motor out? Any hints on the subsequent stages gratefully received as well!

Thanks, Michael

The starter motor (in my 1987 model) is bolted on the front (bendix) side with 3 bolts and on the backside with a single bolt in a metal framework that has to be loosened up a bit. Volvo Service manual Group 33 gives details (action M2).

If you haven´t done so already, download relevant documentation from: https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=b2bf9804 ... FDF0%21108

Haynes is useful, but for serious work get the Volvo Service manuals!

Thanks for the link ppgm - the picture in section 33 (one of the ones with an English version thankfully) really helped, and I've now managed to get the starter motor out.

In terms of taking the clutch itself out, will I need an engine hoist? I can't quite work out from Hayes instructions whether I need to go far enough into the gearbox removal steps to need one or not.

It can be done WITHOUT a hoist, tricky but possible if you get the car high enough on ramps and a couple of scissor jacks, one for gear-box and one under the sump (large section of 20mm ply to spead load)
I actually held up the gearbox with a section of 2" angle iron across from rear sub frame to front of subframe with some serious lashing! not pretty but it worked. !

Guessing you've sorted out by now. Unlike almost every other car I've ever worked on there is three bolts at the front (left) end of the starter motor, and a bizzarre bit of meccano at the other end with one bolt in.
I used a roof rack across the engine bay to support the engine while the g/box was removed. It is a thing of beauty. PM me if you want a picture.
