Both manual and automatic transmission are discussed here, including the clutch!

Gearbox Boffins Where R U?

Post by pol » Tue May 11, 2004 11:09 am

There must be people out there with experience of gearboxes in general or the 480t box??

I still have this problem. Not so much jumps out of 5th, but wont stay in when the throttle is released.

Volvofox had mentioned he had gearbox problems and had something replaced behind the cover (where 5th is). Looking at vadis, there is some sort of 5th locatim mechanism. I'm going to pull the cover off at some point before taking the gearbox off the car.

Looking for any suggestions.

I can describe further the problem if anyone has any thoughts, but don't have cash to burn on a garage looking at the gearbox (whom i wouldn't trust anyway!)

Thanks

From what i remember 5th is bolted on to the gearbox as a seperate item (could be wrong though), so hopefully you only need to replace the 5th part and not the entire gearbox.

but of course you dont have to change the gearbox..it has to do with adjustment under the car in the place the joint of the gearbox is...had the same problem on my ES when on 5th and leaving the accelerator pedal the 5th was out....there are some synchronizers that hold the gears into the proper postion...excuse my english .....this is a common 400 series problem and easy work to do...

see lots of posts i made about this, broke my gearbox, whining sound and jumping out of gear, replaced it with ascrappy, of same age, same problem within weeks! had a specialized compani adapt one for me (i think its jsut a sprayed over newwer gearbox) wasn't expensive tho, even less as the scrappy one.

moral : yes : you can repair the 4th and 5 th gear, inbetween a garage did this for me, but best get a scrapper, but BE AWARE IS ONE OF THE LATEST MODELS (sorry for shouting, didn't mean to wake u ;)

I "totalled"
my car twice that month....
luck,

Thanks volvofox, I did see the other posts and sounds hopeful. My 5th gear is getting worse and now likes to 'crunch' when engaging (synchro problem??). This seemed to happen after a nasty 110mph grind as it slipped half out of gear. Kind of hoping to fix it myself by replacing the suspected components behind the black cover and the damaged parts will be obvious to me.

I've strained a muscle in me shoulder from it fighting me whilst driving to the airport and back! Sometimes 5th isn't even there when I try to select. Gearstick goes to the far rihgt and forward, release the clutch.... Nothing... Scary...
