gearbox oil and change it.

Both manual and automatic transmission are discussed here, including the clutch!

gearbox oil and change it.

Post by V480TI » Thu Mar 11, 2004 9:23 pm

Wouldn't it be wise to change your gearbox oil every 40000 kilometers or so ???
After all; the gearbox contains a lot of moving parts and so.
When you find stuff in the gearbox oil when you change it, you know that you should look for something or maybe even change some parts.

And if you want to change gearbox oil, what to do ??? and what oil should you use ??? Original Volvo oil ??(costs like a small diamond) or just use a ''normal''(not Volvo) gearbox oil ???

Thanks and greetz

The Haynes says that 480 up to 1988 can use an aftermarket oil and cars after 1988 have to use special Volvo oil. The dutch Olyslager says that all 480 must use volvo oil. So the volvo oil will be no problem. But I cannot believe that the Volvo oil is better. In my view it is just an other package.

Hi stay to the original Volvo oil.
It is packed in the right amount and has the right specification.
I have experienced problems I think that are caused by the wrong oil.
My son broke his left front axle in Denmark and the car was repaired by a non Volvo garage and they forgot to collect the oil from teh gearbox and put in a gearboxoil with the righ fiscosity.
But within 5000 Km. the gearbox lost all its gears.
So a gearbox change was needed.
So be carefull witg non volvogearboxoil for the 480.
Remember the gearbox is not all that strong.

And I have experienced that my partsshop (automaterialenhandelaar) could not find the right gearboxoil in his documentation becaus it was not listed.

Good luck

WHen I changed the gearbox oil on my 1992 Turbo,I used Castrol EP80.I had no problems whatsoever.Volvo special oil is £40 per litre in the UK!It is EP80!It made my gearbox smoother for about 100 miles then felt the same as before!!!!Good luck in your decision!

When your clutch is changed, is the gearbox oil drained as part of the change procedure?
