'95 1.7 GT Turbo Gearbox type
My gearbox is blown (it blew while driving...) and I have to find a new one. A Volvo revised gearbox will cost me 1300 Euro's excluding labor, so I'll have to find a secondhand one. The only problem is that the metal plate with the typenumber etc is missing according to the dealer.
Now I have to find out which gearbox I need and which is the best type. Does anyone have an idea of with type was the factory fitted one? What's the latest (I assume best quality) type?
The only information I have is that I have to find a gearbox that can be connected to an electronic counter. (as is standard for the 480's, but not for 440 and 460)
Thnx in advance for any info!

If you give us the exact engine model number, we can look in our reference material to find which box Volvo claim to use for that particular engine, if that helps?

Thnx for the replies.
About repairing the gearbox: I can't do that myself and if I have it done, it'll cost me as much as a secondhand one I think. Maybe when I leave the broken one with the dealer I can get a little discount, because they can use it for the Volvo revision program.
Are the M58E and M59E of good strength? I don't want to have a broken gearbox again (especially while driving) and want the best.
I've seen a M59 for 250 Euro's, but I'll try to find one with some warranty.

Hi,
personal reasons and also the opinion of Volvo mechanics who drive 480.
The M59 has other smaller gear wheel teeth, more silence than the other gearboxes.
Had the fun to drive a M59 which has been renewd, after 250k km-->wooow
I just wanted to say, if you find an M59 with a with less millage than a M58, get the M59.
