5th gear troubles

Post by Ettore Bugatti » Mon Mar 01, 2004 8:49 am

When I engaged 5th gear a whining sound starts. It varies with the amount of throttle applied to the car. We replaced the motor damper (near camshaftbelt) but the sound is still there. What could it be?

Sounds like a dying transmission to me... Does it make the sound only in the 5th gear?

Is your car a turbo model? The transmissions in the 480's are not the strongest in the world. Especially the turbo models often have problems with the transmission, the power of the turbo engine sometimes is 2 much for the trans. Also from what year is your car? The later models (from '90 on i believe) have stonger gearboxes.

It is a very early ES with 170000 km and the sound is only in 5th gear.
The sound becomes louder when I accelerate but on constant speed it almost disappears except when I drive 80kmh.
Could it be that the the gear has worn out?
Im thinking to adjust the gear linkage. Could that be a solution?

syncromesh 5th gear

Post by V480TI » Sat Mar 06, 2004 1:16 pm

I read somewhere that it could be the syncromesh of the fifth gear.
This syncro can be changed with the gearbox still under the car.
They mentioned this syncro especially with the fifth gear, so...

Hope this helps
Greetz
