Slippy clutch

Post by keithemm » Wed Jan 21, 2004 10:33 pm

Hello again,

After having lots of help from the fantastic 'MatBat' most of my electrical problems are now in the past. Ironically, i'm now facing a mechanical one. Yes, you guessed it-the clutch. I find it mainly in 5th, especially when going up hills, if i put the throttle down, to around 3000-3500 rpm, i hear the revs, but the car seems to take a while to catch up. Got any tips?

That is an EXTREMELY good price for it. Did they use a proper Volvo clutch?

at that price?? not a chance. They use clutches made my Sach, or at least they did in my case. I looked it up on Euro Car Parts, they are around £60 for the 3-part kit.

Not unless they charge £2 per hour i suppose.

Proper Volvo clutchfor the 740 cost me £85, and I asked "does that include the thrust bearing?"

"of course not - this is volvo" came the reply!

So this guaruantee... drive it for 10 months, then drive everywhere the last 1and a half riding it, and get a new one. wonder how long you could keep doing that?

For the price that Quichfit Clutches charges I might well go to them from Holland if they fit Sachs clutches.
It is cheaper tha here and still making money on teh regular Volvo-price overhere.

Is this the pricr for a turbo or an ES?

Well, you should be alright then. I don't really know if there is any difference in the clutches between '87 and '90. But i would assume not. Is it really worth coming all this way, you only get 1 years warrantee.

Before you rush to change clutch because of slip, consider the possibility of two things:
a.) It's covered by oil, because of clutch problem.
b.) (b like better) Only a piece of ferodo came away. (This heals itself)
The followings happened to me: I had changed my oil, and - after not much time- I noticed that it began slipping. After (about) 1000km this symptom has disappeared.

 Beware the clutch centres (no names)! Me & a friend learned the hard way
i have had bad experience with them & so did a friend with a A4 2.8 HE WANTED TO SAVE MONEY COS OF THE COST OF CLUTCH - his bill after the F***up was in excess of £900.00 why so dear i hear you ask simple remanufactured clutch screwed up the flywheel - yep the warranty covered the clutch but not the damage that it did to the rest of his car !!!
Me the car drove worse after the job then before.
P.S. his centre was in kent mine was in west london

Clutch centres?
I think names would be quite useful myself.
