help! can't select 5th gear and noisy clutch

Post by cueman » Sun Jan 24, 2010 1:16 pm

All started when i noticed it slipping out of fifth gear when easing off the accelerator, now cannot select 5th at all. Also getting a clanging from the clutch when foot is off pedal and stationary.

Does this sound like clutch & gearbox failure or something that can be sorted more easily?

Any ideas anyone?

I think, that you must dismantle and make inspection inside the gearbox. Unfortunately.

first check go to front of engine and shake the gear selector arm if it is loose thenyes need to go further in :cryhard:

the clanging noise is worrying.

the slipping out of 5th gear could just be an adjustment to the selector rod under car or perhaps a worn bushing where selector rod meets gear linkage.

but to be honest I am not up on gearbox problems.

Just try to eliminate minor things and then you are left with the biggy!

the fact it does not clang at any other time could be a clutch rather than gearbox question but I am no expert.

thanks guys - now been to a gearbox specialist nearby who fixed the problem by putting in new 5th gear, hub and synchro - cost a fair bit but given they only got the car at 3.45ish lessens the blow a bit.

fingers crossed all okay for a while now!
