posting this up to help another member of the forum as only mods can shuffle posts around , abd this one could have got ignored in the general discussions category in the thread it was in.

And believe me I did cry! I'ts ok for you guys having fun in the snow, laughing gayly, my world fell apart on friday, NO GEARS, stuck in 3rd so I could move PUS to a place of safety for the winter or until I can get enough money together to get a new clutch and probably gearbox and might as well ge the timing belt done too, god only knows when that will be. Selling of course is not an option, but if anyone wants to point me in the right direction with some opinons I would be very grateful.

Merry Christmas
Joolz

any ideas or suggestions would be of great assistance to Joolz

I have already pmed Joolz with this message but I am no expert there must be someone on the forum can give a more knowledgeable answer.....

Now is it the clutch ?

Can you put the car into the different gears as you would when the car was stationary or does it feel as if there is nothing there?
Usually when a clutch is on the way out it gives warning , starts slipping etc.

The next logical thing to check is the linkage that could break or come loose and this could cause this failure. The gearstick is pivoted on its holder and then runs down to a push fit connection to the gear shift rod check that hasnt come loose or fallen out. Then go to the engine end of that rod remove the black plastic cover (it is a clip on fit) and check the linkage is not broken or detached should be obvious on inspection.

If it is not that is can only be either the clutch bearing or box that has failed.(expensive repair).

I am not an expert on this but that is is what I would check .
Put up a thread on the forum just to get confirmation of what I have suggested just in case more knowledgable members come up with a better way of checking.

+ does the pedal have resistance if not cable broke.

I expierenced something like that. Also stuck in 3rd gear, the clutch was working so I could drive it. The reason was the nylon bushing in the gearbox to which the gearlinkage is connected. The lock up washer which holds the nylonbushing in place was gone and the bushing felt out. No other gears could be selected and the gearshifter felt very loose. Part #3 on the image below is the bushing I mean.

thanks Jim, I have had trouble with the gear box loosing oil in the past and for the last 4 months I've had a high pitched whine in 5th gear, then friday the whine was in all the gears but much louder. Now its stuck in 3rd...my fault for ignoring it I guess. :(

gosh that sounds as if the gearbox was running dry

still check the rest first.

If it is the gearbox then go to a petrol station and get the free motor "magazine" Motor Market weekly it will have adverts for recon gearboxes and prices.

Maybe that whining noise in 5th was caused by a loose 5th gear. To check remove the black side cover (3 bolts) from the gearbox behind the left frontwheel. Take of carefully, there's a oiltube at the backside of the cover. Now you can see a big nut holding down the 5th gear. It's not uncommon that it loosens on it's own.

You can disconnect the battery, but it's not necessary. Your choice :)

I assume that you haven't any failure in the wiring

Well he was towed along to the garage yesterday, there was an awful clattering and scraping coming from somewhere, sounded like something had sheared off and was moving about eruggggghhhhh  Well its in the hands of some ex volvo guys so I guess they will have seen it all before and hopefully know what they're doing, one of them was a 480 lover and interested to see a 2ltr celebration........looking forward to getting behind the wheel again :scared:

PUS lives!!!!!

Picked him up on friday, after 3month off the road, it's soooo gooood to be driving him again :hopping:

I must admit in a moment of weakness I almost went to test drive a Renault Scenic but the thought of my 480 going to the scrappy was just too painfull :cryhard:

And so for the small price of £500 another 480 lives and more money will be spent this year on a new timing belt, corroded exhaust, rear disks and pads and some cosmetic application to a little rust appearing on the wheel arches.

Do you love your 480? I DO :)
