In a '92 1.7 non turbo (B18EP engine), the gearbox started to make a whinning noise in some gears.
Some kms later (30 maybe) the 3rd gear started to jump out and the 1st one started to be very very dificult to engage.
The actual state is (made 70 kms since the beginning of the noise):
- 1st and 2nd gears engages almost as when it was normal, but make a lot of the whinning noise, especially if the car is going uphill.
- 3rd gear do not engage at all
- 4th gear engages and runs normally
- 5th gear only engages with the engine running, but runs normally
Imediatly after starting the car, with the gearbox not engaged in any gear and the cluch pedal not pressed, it makes the whinning noise, but if I engage a gear and run a few metters, and then back to neutral, it does not make the noise.
After the car runs some hundred meters, if I open the bonnet it smell's gearbox oil like hell
I allready have a replacement gearbox ready to go in, but I would like to know if there is something that can be made on the current one, because currently I do not have spare time to change the gearbox's
I know that it have some oil (I have unbolted a little bit the reverse gear sensor and oil started to come out), but I don't know how much neither what kind of oil it is. Can it be low oil level? Or it is really broken and the only thing that I can do is swaping it with the other one?
Btw, do you think that this oil,

is good for this gearbox's? It does not say anything about bronze components...

It can be the nut on the end of one of the gear shafts that becomes loose. It can be located by draining the gearbox oil, then removing the black cover which is acessible from the passenger wheelarch with the wheel removed and the car jacked up. Seems to be a fairly common thing but may also indicate that synchro rings are already worn.
Thats a fairly quick thing to check.
