Helpp Clutch Issues

Bought my 480 se a few months ago, only has 51400 miles on it but whilst driving back from cornwall the clutch went. Or something in the clutch did. I was slowing down on the motorway and all of a sudden couldnt get a any gear. Limped to the hard shoulder and no matter how much i adjusted the cable it wouldnt make gear selection any easier. So called green flag and the guy said it was likely something in the clucth rather than it going as a result of the clutch plates wearing. Ended up starting the engine in first and changed gear using the throttle all the way back to oxford from jnt 16 m5!
Any ideas?

check linkage under the car. check the connection is tight at the gearbox linkage end.
