confusion about clutch diameter pre 1991 and afterwards
Oke, I seem to remember from this forum that the pre 1991 turbo's have a 200mm diameter clutch and after 1991 a 215 mm clutch that according to reactions here is not so well.
But I wonder why a well known Dutch tuning company (DBM engineering in Maarssen) lists sport clutches for all years as 200 mm's.
Is it so simple that I can put a 200 mm clutch on a 1992 turbo or is this not possible ???
I thought the sport clutches they list are Sachs sport so should be good quality and available in sinter metal and organic stuff.
And maybe the solution for many of us here with tweaked engines, not to have to make a sport clutch from Renault and Volvo parts.
But the question remains can I fit a 200 mm clutch on a after 1991 turbo ???

I'm currently pondering what clutch I should fit to the -89 B18FT. It probably has the 200mm clutch at the moment, but will it slip? I'm going to put a new one in anyway so does the 215mm fit on it or do I need the newer flywheel?
And slip-wise, which one of these two clutch sizes is better? Is bigger always better?

dakyy contact b18ftlover he can answer that one as he was in the same position as you a couple of months ago.
I dont bother about these things being a non turbo driver but I seem to remember the number of teeth on flywheel ? is linked to the clutch diameter so if you move up diameter you need to get bigger flywheel has to do with the number of teeth and flywheel sensor . you might also need a thrust bearing as well but not sure about this bit.

Friction services in bristol will put racing compound on your worn out clutch at any thickness you like ( i go for 1mm thicker) overnicght for £30 inc vat , and for £60 increase the Nm presuure of your pressure plate spring by 50% .(this is a sent away 1 week turnaround)
SO IN ESSENCE £90 And then you have shit hot racing clutch!
this is good for holding 250bhp , if there is any cheaper and better way of doing it i have never heard of it.
cheers Felyx

The 215mm clutch which is actually after late 1992 on chassis numbers ending in a number higher then '499' Has a completly different flywheel. If your looking to use a race spec clutch then look at any renault 5 and mk1 and mk2 clio's they use the same flywheel and clucth. I have a 215mm sach racing clutch £190

Re: confusion about clutch diameter pre 1991 and afterwards
Thats an interesting topic. My problem is quite the same. I want to buy a new clutch set for my '92 engine, but there is no 215mm set on the market at the moment around here.. So should I rebuild to 200mm (I have the old flywheel from a spare engine) or take a look at the clio sets? I not only need the clutch, I need a new pressure plate and bearing as well. Would it be the same at renault as well?
Thanks in advance.
Oh, and one more question: why should I change the sensor as well? What is the difference between pre and after '91 sensors? I thought if you change the computer, it should work.
Thanks in advance.

According to the problem of one mate from Polish 480 Forum - flywheel is different, so car won't be able to ignite.

Re: confusion about clutch diameter pre 1991 and afterwards
I really dont get the reason of this. looking at the sensors, they are the same, and these give only a sign to the ECU wich controls the ignition based on that sign. So thinking further, it should not matter the size of the flywheel. I have a maroon ECU, so it should work with both.. or not?
