flywheel skim

Post by kev » Tue Sep 09, 2008 3:05 pm

Hi all , I have just removed the clutch and on inspection a new one is required.
It is the later turbo one and the cheapest price is £131 .
I think this is down to the diameter of 215mm .So in turn the flywheel
must be larger . I have removed the flywheel and it looks ok but I am
thinking of skimming it . Anyone done this ?
Does anyone have a new clutch going spare ?

KEV STOP STOP STOP!!!!

"friction services" of bristol. will re-plate the clutch to a racing compound standard and 1mm thicker if you want for £25!!!!!!
and refurbish and reenforce your clutch spring by an extra 100nm if you want for £55 then just buy a new thrust bearing from volvo.

they are very quick on the plate ( overnight ) and 4 days on the pressure plate refurb.

LEE will confirm this is the way to go we have both gone this routewith no regrets atall.

a clutch like this would cost about £350 if you could find one you can't.

Cheers Felyx , go on Kev your doing such a great job on your car from the pictures i've it would be criminal and more expensive not to!!

Hi Kev,

Just replaced the clutch on mine, and I've had the flywheel skimmed...

Front

Back (showing balancing marks)

Front has been honed very nicely, and is completly flat, very nice indeed. I had surface heat cracks, and light scoring from where I believe something got inbetween the fly and the friction plate.

Anyway this was all done at a place in Coventry (I know your in Nottingham so not to bad...) Chesman Motorsport for £30.

Thanks guys, The fly wheel looks great ! They have gone across the whole face
so they must have removed the pins .Did they put the old ones back in ?
I was wandering if removing them would damage them.
I can skim the flywheel myself but thanks for the link.

The clutch referb seems a good idea just one question ...Why would I
want to incrcease the spring strength ? Is it because of slip with the richmod ? Will look into this right away .

Thanks Kev

Hi Kev yes a stronger spring and a 1mm thicker plate can handle way way more power , rpruen had a great clutch but he would light up his tyres with so much power (275bhp ish) so last time i spoke to him he was considering putting a volvo 340 rear wheel drive on aswell to make his a 4wheel drive

this really is the way to go mate cheers

Now then felyx, as much of a non-mechanic I am do you have to go to the Friction Services with the plate in hand, meaning you would have to have your own crane etc to lift it out. Or are they able to do that as well?

As I can see myself needing this doing some point soon, and well it'd give me a good excuse to visit my mates in Bristol :)

On a side note how much are the thrust bearings from Volvo?

Same goes for you rgreenhalf, Coventry would be a bit easier to get to for me :)

Cheers,

Ian

Muddy buddy , they will do your clutch plate or whatever you want but only if you post or take the parts to them , i.e the price dos'nt include giving your car to them and then coming with an amazingly huge thrifty grin on your face . though i can arrange a clutch swap in bristol (3 miles from friction services) for £80 if you have the new clutch in your hand or £120 if he takes it out then you refurb and then bring it back as his workshop space is TIME EQUALS MONEY ETC!!

cheers felyx

Right I have had a price from Volvo for a new thrust bearing £27.43 .

I also contacted Friction services & a overhaul without seeing the clutch
would be about £90 for standard springs and pad material.

So it comes down to this ...If you want a standard replacement buy from
partsforvolvo £140 delivered,

If you want a Volvo one you are looking at about £220

If you want better perfomance send it to Friction Services bearing in mind
the shipping costs and extra for stronger springs and thicker material.
The choice is yours.
Will let you know what I decide soon.

My approach has always been watch ebay, and wait for this one chap to clear a 480 clutch. He sells excess stock for a big motorfactor. I've had 2 off 215mm valeo clutches for 45quid delivered.

Of course no good if you need one NOW and theres not one up.

hi there

as well as rebuilding pressure plates (very useful company for classic car restoration etc!) am I right in reading your post that they also rebuild friction plate too? If so, that's a very useful company!!!

:)

Shimon that is exactly what they do they uprate and refurbish all clutch or brake components that involvo friction hence " friction services " but if you are in manchester there will be more than 1 company that does this where you live . if you start looking start by ringing H.G.V garages etc as this will the quickest way to find them.
