Clutch Change.

Both manual and automatic transmission are discussed here, including the clutch!

Clutch Change.

Post by rgreenhalf » Tue Jul 29, 2008 11:42 am

Finally getting round to changing my clutch in my Volvo this weekend, just wondering if anyone has any advice for things I need to buy / do.

I've got a new genuine Volvo Clutch going in there, new gearbox oil (albeit temporary as not sure if bronze stable) and a massive engine crane. Reading the haynes I see there is 2 methods for doing it, I wasn't planning on totally removing the engine.....

Clutch alignment tool needed? Anything else I should be doing with the gearbox off?

Cheers

Clutch alignment tool useful, but not vital.

Personally i choose to drop the whole subframe out for a clutch. Then you get the luxury of the world's easiest timing belt change at the same time, and can throughly de-rust the subframe, suspension etc and paint it all up.

You can do the clutch between the subby and the chassis, by dropping the sub at that side only. I've not done it as it looked really gay, but this is probably the quickest option.

Thanks JT.

Theres no rush on this one, and timing belt change at same time would be beneficial as not sure when it was last done, so i'd be looking to do water pump, belts and tensioners.

Dropping whole subframe, does that mean supporting engine from crane, drop subframe so weights on crane, then break gearbox off? (Never done this before, and don't have haynes to hand so just wanted to clarify)

I've got access to some POR15 for some rust prevention ;)

I used a halfrauds alignment tool... was utter shite... in the end I used
a piece of broom handle made up to the right diameters with electricians
tape. Went in first time. (shame about the 5 failures with the halfrauds pap)

I did it the gay way then! *grin* But i didn't have an engine hoist so it made
more sense. If you have a hoist then drop the subframe.. far easier.. Don't forget your steering joint tho... *whistles innocently*

I've decided to remove the engine from the car, and this weekend I've basically got it to the stage ready to crane it out, the only thing I'm not certain about is what to do with the air con stuff? I'm following the haynes manual (loosely) and it doesn't even mention air con....

Cheers

Hi there

Bit of a random idea here but I’m in Manchester and have a clutch change to do on a 480 and a gearbox change on a 440 TD coming up and would like to learn how to do it. I’m prob going to go for the engine out method you are going for here.

I’m not free this weekend (10th) but am on the 17th? I’m up for coming down to Kenilworth on the 17th for the day to help you out if you want. I’m no expect at this stage but am willing to assist you. I’ve worked on various Volvos since I was 16 , don’t engine swaps on 340s etc but am a little new to the 400s.

Kind regards

Shimon
