27 mpg....how do i improve this...

Post by FLYINGDORK » Mon Feb 18, 2008 10:41 pm

Hi ....

I've been running my 2 nd 480 for over a year now...and im only getting 27mpg....about 220-240 mile to 40 ltrs of fuel......

Shes an automatic 2.0 ltr and runs very smooth with no engine noise or problems.....apart from high fuel usage.....

most drivings done at about 40 althouth the info centre says average 22 mph......l

Is this normal or a tad low.....

cheers Richard

Depends how you drive it, I get about 25 in heavy stop-start traffic, but about 37 on the motorway at 75 m.p.h. I have a 2.0 manual.

Having a manual usually helps, one more gear so the engine doesn't need to work as hard.

Have you checked things like tyre pressure, don't have anything heavy in the boot which you don't need in the car. It all adds up

check that your brakes work ok and don't stay a bit on. That can also hurt the milage, had that problem in the rear

27 mpg on a 2 litre auto is good and if you ask volvo all it was ever meant to do on urban cycle etc, boy racering around town would make it about 18 mpg etc. cheers felyx
140mph for £175 just test the brakes

Have you considered an LPG conversion? Apparently magnetic fuel cells makes a slight difference.

27 is pretty shitty! That's about the same as I get.. I get 14l / 100km.. That's 20.18 mpg :(
Performance is fine, it pulls good. Everything is fine, except I find the engine noisy, especially after about 2500rpm..

I don't get it either?
back to the mpg issue.......my 480 automatic has done over 140,000 miles and uses no oil and is very good on fuel, to be honest I would'nt take what the computer says as gospel mine was reading 68mpg at 85mph (I was going down hill at the time?)
even without taking the display to seriously it usually manages between 80 -100 miles on 2 gallons

I think with a small engine and an automatic gearbox your always going to be pushing your luck getting good fuel consumption, I think the best way to save on fuel is put your foot down about an inch and let the autobox do the rest, progress is a bit slower but you soon get a good cruising speed. I am suprised my volvo gets such a high cruising speed at low rev's maybe the engines are just lazy?
despite all my mpg most passengers moan and tell me to slow down? maybe it's the fact that these cars have such good road holding and brakes?

I think that your coldstart censor is messing with you.
