Putting a 440 gearbox into a 480 - how I got on.

Both manual and automatic transmission are discussed here, including the clutch!

Putting a 440 gearbox into a 480 - how I got on.

Had no choice but try - and it worked OK. The final dif ratio seems fractionally higher (it's a box from a 2l 440, going into a 1.7 480) which I feel is an advantage, as the car was a bit buzzy with revs on motorways.
The speedo pickup was the only hurdle - the 480 is electronic and the 440 mechanical - i.e. cable driven. Without the electronic pickup connected you get no speedo/odometer or info centre operation that needs speed or distance to calculate - e.g. miles per gallon. I remember someone asking if they could be converted, and the simple answer is no, because of the different arrangements within the 'box. I have come up with a simple solution that uses an external encoder and the original sensor to get full operation of the speedo functions. I would be prepared to email a picture or supply it as a kit to anyone who needed to go down this path to keep their 480 on the road.

I thought the B20F had the same diff ratio's as the B18Xs. Only the turbo had a gear ratio which is 10% lower.

Please, show us the pics. :hopping:

440 gearbox in a 480

You might be quite right regarding the diff. ratio. Please note that I wrote that it seems lower revving at motorway speed. I would have liked to have known for sure before I started, as it was one of my concerns. Haynes book no help.
I can't do pictures at the moment, (cameras & card readers stolen in a burglary last week) but if you supply your email address I'll forward them once they've been replaced.

hi

I'd be interested in some pics of the speedo solution you came up with :)

I've had my camera replaced, so can do. Please supply your email address & I'll forward some pictures. I find it's a bit of a pain to get pix onto this forum..
