Another 5th gear problem - help?!?
Not posted for a while as my 480 has been running like a dream.
BUT, over the last month it has been getting a little tricky to engage fifth gear - at first the gear change seemed a little 'stiff' and I wasn't sure if I was imagining it. The problem, has however, been getting steadily worse and at present it feels awkard to get in gear like its a problem with the linkage (seems awkward even when putting it into gear with engine off and not moving).
Once in gear there are no problems with it jumping out of gear (at the moment anyway).
If anyone can give me some ideas as to what the problem may be and how easy it is to put right I would be eternally grateful as I need to drive to Heathrow this Thursday and don't want to get stuck!
Thanks in advance, Cooper

How did you fix your gearbox? this is exactly what my gearbox it doing. when you try and put it into fifth gear is as tho the gearleaver is not going over far enough but like you said it fine once it's in fifth. also when is cold the gear shift feels really heavy but it gets easyer as the engine heats up. any ideas any one. I've cheacked the oil level in the box and it fine and the gear linkage has some play in it but nothing searous.

I only had my gearbox sorted out on Friday so it's coincidental that this thread should come to life again!
Anyway, good news was that it was simply a loose gear linkage which just needed re-tightening up. I had my local Volvo specialist garage look at it for me as I haven't had time - didn't seem to need any parts so assume it's a fairly easy job to do.
Hope that your problem just turns out to be this not the selector forks Derek - sounds very similar to my problem so that's a good sign!

I have no locking nut at the end of my clutch cable and after about 500 miles I have to adjust it by hand......I know it needs doing when I start to have a struggle getting into 5th gear.
