Gearbox replacement

Hi all

I am new to this forum so a little history.

My mate and me have just bought a Volvo 480S with the 2 litre engine as a project. The previous car we looked at was a Fiesta!! We have basic mechnical experience.

The car was due to meet the crusher due to the gearbox having had a hole put in the bottom after grounding. It has other issues to sort too.

Our first job is the gearbox.

The question is what is the easiest way to remove its gearbox? From under the car by removing the sub frame etc or out the top by removing the engine and gearbox as one?

If anyone has any secrets I would love to know I won't tell, honest.

Come on. I am used to a Ford Capri turbo and my good friend is used to a V'hall Carlton 6 pot!!!

Dropping the subframe a little is the best way. You can leave most stuff conencted and squeeze it out of the gap. Tough to get back on though!

Failing that, on the 2.0 its quite easy to hoist the engine out upwards, or drop the subframe totally out downwards.

First time - 1.5 days. Third time - 3 hours. I made a beam hoist using a roof rack. email me if you want pictures. I used one of the Haynes methods - wordy, but works OK - that is, support engine, remove LH suspension bits, lower subframe and 'box out under the LH wheel arch.
Even managed it at a wreckers in a little over 4 hours.
Tips: buy pin punches for RH driveshaft, don't miss the bolt under the starter motor which HAS to come out... good luck!
