Auto to Manual- Big Job?

Post by Roo » Mon Jun 18, 2007 8:51 pm

Just an initial general enquiry really as to how involved the change would be. Obviously I would need a gearbox and clutch pedal but what further items would need to be changed?
And who's breaking a manual 480 with all the bits?! ;)

It cant be that difficult... Deffo driveshafts, linkage, stick etc, subframe, n/s wishbone, pedal / pedal box, cable, you'll be needing a clutch, so maybe you also need a different flywheel? - Then pop a huge wheelspin with your fingers up!

I did an auto to manual and it wasn't too tricky.

Sold the auto to my mum, and bought a manual. :D
Prob quickest and cheaper option Andy!

Haven't looked back either, manual much more fun/fuel efficent.

Are there any differences between late manual boxes/ general setup /underbonnet fixings brackets etc and the earlier turbo boxes? obviously, an early manual turbo will be easier to find in a breakers etc than a late one.

I dont think there is any difference. Not from the ones i've seen anyway.

Apart from.... The clutch cable fork length and it's mount. But this can be swapped with whatever you have at the moment. I took my latest gearbox from a '91 Turbo with lower mileage and had to swap the fork. There is an eye on the gearbox where the cable feeds through. Some models have an extension bolted to this eye to raise the eye higher depending on fork length..

I have various bits that could be of use if you get stuck - were gonna go on your engine, so i don't suppose they are reserved any longer.

I have gearstick/pedalbox/gearbox (m59) etc, probably driveshafts too.
You need a subframe though, so you might get all that stuff from the same car.
