How often should the gearbox oil be changed? (relating to this)

I doubt mine has been changed (93 K-reg) but just wondering at what sort of interval it should be :)

Ian

Haynes says every 36 000 miles or 3 years!

I think mine may be in need of doing... :scared:

Well actually Haynes lie! Volvo specify no change needed for the life of the car as in the oil will outlive the car but members have reported improved smoothness after changing the gear oil.

It was actually me that created the new topic. Your only allowed to reply to threads in the How To section if you are adding to the procedure, all questions have to be posted on the relevant forum.

I don't know how often, but I wanted to be sure that i have correct oil and amount in it. Found out that my gearbox only had 1,8L off black stuff in it instead of the 3,4 L. The gearchange is a git smoother, but not much. But no more wierd whining sound 1 and 2 gear. And the reverse goes in nice ans smooth.

ammopunt?

quick question regarding this, how/where do you phill it up, do you fill it up through the engine bay as i can only guess it would be impossible to fill her up underneath the car :o
from your pictures it wasnt too clear where it was under the body, any help/pointers for this thicko here ? :D

ian

also guys (as I don't like starting new threads) anyone up for writing a lovely guide with pictures to show how to change the fuel filter, i saw someone write a quick guide mentioning that it would get very messy :D but I just want something I can rely on. I have the part, just need to fit it :)

As for oil filter do you mean engineoil or autobox oil filter? The thread is for a manual box.

Wrote that realy late so mistakes to happen, but the top fillin plug you can see even from the top of the engine. Its on the front side of the gearbox. And as said you must fill it up to the point it starts seaping out again from there. As for filling up, you must get a right type off oil that mixes with the one you have in there. If needed I'll soon post an oilchange thread. Cos that the job I'll do in the next weeks time. Cos I'm starting to loose oil presure from certain temp, that means that the oil is cooked and loosing its properties.

I also thought Volvo specified it never needs changed....

It needs to come out if you ever have a drive shaft off so seems a good time to change it..

Just changed mine. I think it previously had semi synthetic. changed for fully synthetic. Can't say i notice 'smoother' gear changes though.
