Please help

Post by yoshi » Tue May 08, 2007 12:54 pm

Hi, I'm brand new to this forum, I found it after googling most of the world looking for information of 480 gearbox's.

I recently blew 5th gear in my 480 Turbo which has an M59 gearbox, I was wondering if the gearbox from my 480ES which has an M57 gearbox would fit my Turbo.

Does any one know the difference?

Thanks in advance Rob

I believe they would fit, but different ratio's and the ES has a mechanical speedo.

I'd get another M59. (A similar thing happened to me a couple of years ago... new box still going strong!)

The m59 is the only manual box your want. The ES box will not last with a turbo engine

the ES has a mechanical speedo.
Mechanical speedo no, the ES has an electronic one the same as the turbo, all 3 ES's I've had have anyway

Would be better off with an M59 though as it's a stronger box

Thanks for all the advice, is there another gearbox out of a Renault that will fit and give better life span. I have a heavy right foot and worried it will blow again.

A local gearbox centre has said they could change 5th gear with the box still in the car but I thinki t wont last long. I would rather change the box to a more reliable item if there is such a thing.

Would any one be intrestind in making an offer for the car once it got a box full of all it's gears, it's a 1993 turbo, 101000 miles 8 months MOT 4 good tyres, in good condition with a bit of rust on the back arches?

I fancy a C70

You can change 5th gear with it still on the car. I have done it but my gearbox blew shortly after that!

what's the relationship between the M59 used in the turbos and the JC5 used in the diesels? same box? could the M59 be used in a diesel?

1. the ratios between a -es and turbo boxes are different, but not alot. They belong to the same Renault M50 series.

2. all 480 boxes have electronic speedo pickups. 440s and 460s are mechanical. They can be used, but a mod has to be done. Email me & I'll forward you pictures of two I have done.

3. I really doubt whether the extra torque from the turbo engine will harm the -es box. Do you hammer the poor thing? The -es box is used in 1.7 and 2.0 litre cars... Just be sure to use the right bronze safe transmission oil. There's a huge thread on that subject...and not all postings are correct...
