Auto Gearbox Cover Leaking still!!!Help!

Post by catgroom » Sat Jan 13, 2007 10:41 pm

Hi

The spur gear cover on the end of my auto box rusted through.I repaired it but bought another volvo cover and gasket for peace of mind.

The torx headed bolts which hold it on are rusted, full of crap and one is slightly rounded.

So,Im considering what to do to make this easy to get off.Im going to perhaps drop the subframe so I can get to all bolts easy enough.

Would some of you heat up the bolts/use grips (cough!!),I dunno thats why Im posting this.lol

Any help would be an advantage!

Steve :D

Well I sorted it!I know most of you either hate autos or wont have this problem but...a how to!

You need a Torx T27 bit.Clean out these Torx bolts 1st with WD40 and wire brush.

If yer changing the cover, hammer the edges flat to get grips or hammer and screwdriver to move the bolts if they round off. They wont be tight tight.

The hardest bit is the 2 between chassis and gearbox, done by working from the top.Just use the T27 bit and a 1/4" spanner or equivalent size to turn.Hold the T27 bit in the hole by levering against the chassis leg with a large screwdriver, thus pushing the bit into the hole.Fiddly but doable!

I didnt fit the new gasket but used Blue Hermatite instead which wont contaminate the ATF as it dries really quickly...

Not leaking so far.

BUT,these do rot through on manual car and Autos.4 minute pinholes and mine was pissing out ATF.Liquid Metal was a quick temporary fix.Lasts about a month tops!

Good Luck!

Steve

Nothing useful to add, just looked like a lonely post in here!

I dont know the auto box, but where is it leaking from? The gasket?

Steve,

My advice would be and I know you can't do this due to lack of crane etc.

connect crane
undo subframe/wires etc

bring it down to the floor and use drill with wire brush once end plate is off to clean the surfaces to bare metal.

seal it all up and let dry.

re-fill atf and wait.

not very easy job but worth the 2 days work.
