The reason I ask is this;
I have had a whining noise coming from my engine bay ever since the gearbox was replaced, hence I've been thinking that it was a knackerd gearbox.
I have put some gearbox additves in there that claim to sort out whines. The latest being this think treacle-like liquid that you subsititue for some of you gearbox oil. The noise still exists and has not made it any quieter.
I am starting to think it's something else, but what?
Things that re-enforce the 'something else' theroy are; when i'm in 3rd and going down a hill with the clutch engaged (about 2000rpm), it whines.
When i push in the clutch, it goes away. If it was gear whine, surely the sprokets would still be moving when i put my clutch in, hence it would still whine, am i right about this?
However, if it were the clutch release bearing, then it would make a whine/grating noise at idle, the problem only happens when i'm actally going along the road, at all speeds upto 35mph and in 1st 2nd 3rd, and ever so very slighly in 4th.
EDIT: The noise varies with road speed not engine rpm, and the noise goes away when i disengage the clutch.
I know i'm a moaning minnie, but the above is causing me to stay awake at night.
Are there bearings in the gearbox mech. that are not oiled?

if you disengage the clutch the gearbox would still turn but wouldn't the load put upon it be reduced? hence the whining whilst costing but stops when clutch is pushed in?
may be talking utter bolloks here, but its an idea
*edit*
also as you change up the gears it goes away, could that also be load related, i.e as you are changing through the gears you are getting closer toa 1:1 ratio loading the gears less with each change?

yes thats right.
its definatly load related.
this is what i now reckon it is:
n/s inner cv joint, i reckon the driveshaft doesnt fit in its socket snugly. still this treacle stuff would have sorted this out.
or
the outer cv joint, it doesnt click or anything, but at low speed, the whine is definatly louder on full left lock (at low speed).
it may not be the gearbox after all.

well if it helps my outer cv joints are now starting to whine (stupidly towed a car home with the rubber boots split) and i hope that they haven't run without grease for long enough to do serious damage. The noise it makes now sounds kinda similar to yours, i have a bearing/geary sounding whine which increases with road speed, gotta be worth checking the cv's
