Cv Boot split

Post by owen080808 » Sun Nov 26, 2006 12:49 pm

Rigtho, now that i've actually got a sunday to spend on the car seems like i uncover more problems as i fix the ones on my list, but i'll leave that for another time! :(

Both My outer driveshaft boots are preshied and split and have started to weep grease. accoriding to haynes its both driveshafts off, and as a result drain g/box oil/lots of hassle to replace these. I've seen a few places selling this sort of kit and was wondering if anyones tried it? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... widgetthis

There was another thread discussing this here : http://volvo480.dragons.org.uk/forum/vi ... hp?t=10434 but it doesn't really reach a conclusion, altho some of the comments suggest that the change can be done cheaply and in minutes (i assume this is done by somehow stretching the new boot over the cv joint?)

I think i'd rather get the real deal but for £22 i might get the glue up ones, even if its just to last through the winter months when i'd rather not be under the car!

What do you guys think, anyone who could share their experiences would be much appreciated!

The split ones, i think are a bit rubbish, however, we have since used stretchy boots that our local place sells.

The are a very stretchy rubber boot and a large plastic cone.

You cut the old boot off, put the cone over the end of the driveshaft and slide the new boot over it and onto the shaft, so no need to dismantle the driveshaft UJ.

Takes a bit of effort and lots of lubricant, but works well.

Unfortunately, I had real problems doing this because of the condition of the struts. It basically took me all bloody day so my experience wouldn't be much use unless the bolts had all fused in your wheel arch too. :(

I had this on my ES and paid £37 to get one side done at a garage. As it was out of town where I took it, he let me watch him do it and we had a good chat about cars and stuff. His tyre lackey ordered the part but got a universal wrap around thingy but the mechanic said to order in the proper thing and that he preferred to use them. Took about 40 mins to do? That was with a air socket though :)

Recently done the drivers side one on mine

Undo the hub nut on the outer end of the driveshaft, then jack up the car and take out the roll pin on the gearbox end of the shaft, undo the suspension strut from the hub then pull the hub assembly outwards, the driveshaft should come off the splines at the gearbox end and then it can be withdrawn from underneath the car

Then it's just seperate the cv joint from the shaft and fit the new boot, then put it all back together and wonder what all those extra bolts and things that are left over are for ;)

Haven't done a passenger side one on a 480 but can't see it being much different, apart from the dropping the gearbox oil bit...

Don't use the split ones! These are really rubbish. The stretchy one wich chriss1roll suggest are good to use. If you don't want to buy the cone, just use a plastic cola bottle..

Thanks for all the responses folks, It feels a lot less daunting a mission now. I think i'll have a look for some of these super stretchy things. I didnt think the glued up ones would be much cop, especially with the forces involed at some mph

Are the stretchy ones available everywhere or do i need to order them online? i like the coke bottle idea, thats doing the job on a scotsmans budget ;)

boots are available everywhere. Boots from GKN are very stretchy (300373) or get two or three universal boots. They rip easily, but one in three stays intact.

I prefer removing the entire shaft and remove the CV joint from the shaft and then replace the boot.
