Can you repair/change sprokets when the gearbox is still in?
Anyone done this?
I think i'm going to give the car another chance so it had better behave.
1st 2nd and 3rd is whining and its getting worse, now I don't want to go to the expense and faffing about of getting yet another gearbox in, that might whine again, so i want to do this while the box is still in the car.
What tools do I need? A fifth gear puller? A seldgehammer? How to i get the sprockets off? How much to the sprokets cost new?
Don't forget ladies that i've got my old box (for a couple of days) to practice on before it goes to the skip.
save me from the wrath of an austin maxi!

Refurb...?
Hola,
I'm at risk of a swift kicking here... but... What's the condition of the old
box...?
I'm thinking that since it's out of the car then refurb it...?
I the whine undriveable? Can it be 'put up with' while you strip
the old box on the kitchen table (dishwashers are great parts washers)
and rebuild it? The HBOL should have enough info in it to do a strip
down?
Or sling the box over to a refurb company... bound to be a bunch of,
mad scientist, box specialists on an industrial park near you somewhere
and have them re-furb it...
Course if the old box is just a smoking ruin with a cracked case and
other faults that make it beyond economical repair then I'm talking
out of my hat here...
Gearboxes are honestly not that scary (well old Triumph ones weren't)
you just have to be methodical and work in a nice clean environment.
(kitchen table)
The box in my Turbo has to come out.. it makes incredibly bad noises!
If there's anything in my old box that is still good that you need to fix
your box I'll gladly send it to ya...

Or perhaps not....
Ok.. so I finally found the HBOL... and they just bottle out and
reccomend gearbox repairs to a specialist...
What a bunch of $%%^&£'s
I'd still crack the old one open... the damage 'should' be localised...
and therefore might be repairable in the kitchen...

I've been brave enough in the past to repair gearboxes...they never last long...and you sure as hell can't do anything in the car, with the possible exception of 5th gear in some cars.
Most garages won't even attempt it.
Basically theres tight specs on the selector fork positions and such so that without the specs you can't easily re-create the proper clearances.
