any gearbox from a 4xx or a renault F7F/R or F3R engine can be used. Check the ratios. Remember that not not all boxes, like from smaller engines, can cope with the torque from your engine.
If you have a 480, then you will have to do some work to get the speedometer in the gearbox...

i already tryed to connect a r5 gte gearbox with a 2 l motor but
i had to change the fixholes and at least the clutch doesnt work for longtime, therefore i thought a clio gearbox would be better, are all with
electronic speedometer ?

Get a gear box from one of these engines:

F2N 1.7 65kW (R5 '88- )

F3N 1.7 55kW (R5 '88- )

F3P 1.8 66kW (Clio, Laguna, Megane)

F3R 2.0 85kW (Laguna, Megane)

F4R 2.0 16v 124kW (Clio RS or any Laguna)

F7P 1.8 16v up to 99kW (Clio, R19)

F7R 16v Williams (Clio)

F8M 1.6D 40kW (R5, Express)

F8Q 1.9D 48kW (Clio, Kangoo)

Engines also found in other cars like the R19, R21, Scenic, etc

Also compatible are:

gearboxes from 1.9 TD engines found in S/V40 and Carisma ('96 - '99)

The gearboxes mentioned are compatible and can be mounted as an original. Except the speedo...

Ofcourse the boxes from the small engines are not practical, and I will look for gearbox ratios...

I guess that they have an electrical speedo. But I don't know if it's compatable with the 480 system...

(voltage, number of pulses per rev.)

I wouldn't recommend the R21 gearbox. It was terrible. I had an R21 and it wouldn't stay in 1st... apparently it was a common flaw in the design. :?

Recommended is a gearbox from renault startting with JB5. These are tougher than the JB3's

My jb5 gearbox on my ex r5(with 1.4 turbo engine) was a quick failure due to massive and brutal torque, the differential allways pushed out the circlip witch was holding in... but no more after gearbox change, a renault 21 gearbox, jb3 type(come with a f2n engine) and faced with 1.3 bar.

Hi!

Are there any changes to get a close ratio gearbox mounted on a Williams engine ?? (for racing purposes).

Especially the 2nd, 3rd and 4th must be very close.
I think the diesels gearboxes have a very long ratio but I am not sure.

Is there any walk through on the forum on how to change the gear box? Would this be a strictly professional job? Or could a budding and compatent Amature handle it?

I am not so into Volvo & Renault but I think a good amature mechanic can do the job.

I have another question, is there a list of gearboxes which can be used together with the technical data like gear and diff ratio's??

Cheers, JC

diesel gearboxes will handle a massive amount of torque and will be good for drag racing / accleration. But will run out of puff very quickly and the top speed over all will be affected.. If you could get gears 1st-2nd-3rd out the diesel box and use gears 4th&5th from the renault 21 petrol engine then im sure you could make a few changes and thus you would get the acceleration and the top speed but 3rd to 4th would be a big jump in ratio's
