2 New Volvo's with problems

Post by Cerberus » Tue Sep 12, 2006 7:07 pm

Ok.. Bit of a newbie alert I'm afraid... But I have done a a bit of searching.. so hopefully not too wet behind the ears...

I set out to but a turbo.. but I've ended up with an 1989 ES and a 1990 Turbo...

The ES is an utter dog.. There is a bust engine mount I think.. it pops out of 5th when backing off the loud pedal.. And the brake pedal is softer than yer granny and pumping it doesn't help... Made for some scary scary moments bringing it home...

The turbo is a much cleaner car.. but it has one big malady... It makes a horrid noise that I think might be the clutch release bearing... It seems to go into gear ok but sounds like either the bearing or some horrid differential collapse...??

So.. I humbly beg your sage like advice 480 gurus...!

Whats the likelyhood that the release bearing is the source of the nasty noise... and what are the hopes I can spend 2 or 3 days on the driveway pulling the gearbox...

and

Any advice on the brakes of the ES...? dodgy servo.. or just the mucky black brake fluid is well past it's best? Pedal only starts working at 80% of it's travel! Seems better when stone cold....

Hope to be here for a while... Even the doggy ES has me grinning from ear to ear...!

Cheers!

 Fuck me ,what a can o worms matey!

Now then, the noise from the Turbo one, does it disappear when you depress the clutch?

If so listen to the cambelt cover,or take it off. While someone else presses the clutch of course see if it goes away when its pressed. The reason for listening in this area is that I suspect its the cambelt tensioner.I only say this as it was on my 92 Turbo, may well not be the case on your shed cough Turbo.

Good Luck mate

Steve :hopping:

Worms + Can = ?

Post by Cerberus » Wed Sep 13, 2006 9:44 pm

Ohhh yes.. worms indeed...

I see you have a Foose avatar... Made me smile.. In fact I wore my
Foose T-Shirt when I went and collected the ES....

I'd always intended to buy a 'bit of a clunker' Because funds are tight...
I'm running out of working cars.. and decided to get something cheap
with some ticket left.. and some personality...

Apparently these 480's have a bit too much personality.. as I now have two...

I'll have to try the clutch and see where and if the nasty noise changes...

How hard is it to have the cambelt cover off and inspect the tensioner???

I'm steeling myself to replace the snapped engine mount on the ES.. with
that done (and the brakes sorted) I'll have something more economical
than my current run around to do the trip to work and back...

For fun... who wants to have a guess at what my current run about is...?

:D

Cheers guys!

Howdo geez...

Cambelt cover is a pisser to remove.. they strategically placed all the bolts in the most annoying, hardest to reach areas of the cover. Just takes patience... as does more than one 480... welcome to that small and slightly deranged club mate ;)

It's the Jaguar AJ6 straight six lump...

Image

(same, but not my engine in this pic)

smooth as silk.. and yes.. ever so slightly thirsty.. Especially with sport
mode engaged..

I do love it when some young chav fancies his chances.. it's worth the
computer screaming 1MPG at me....

Not a nimble as a 480 tho.... ;)

Ahah! Yeah, after I posted I realised it wouldn't be the V8... still huge!!!

chav crushing is a great hobby and like all great hobbies, you've gotta throw some money at it... lol

I've toyed with the idea of an XJS a few time and bottled it cos, I realised it would drink all my beer money! :(

Got a serious amount of dark black filthy brake fluid out of her...

Brake pedal is still fecking awful tho..

I'm sensing a brake servo swap in my future... Anyone done it? Any
tips??

Cheers guys!
