Whining noise from gearbox (perhaps)

Right everybody, ive got a whining noise and i think its coming from my gearbox, but I could be wrong. To save writing a story, here are the points of what is going on.
- Only occurs whilst moving.
- Goes away when I push my clutch in.
- Doesn't occur when idling, with clutch in or out.
- I can "feel" the noise on the gearstick.
- Started happening all of a sudden.

Can anyone suggest anything as to what it is....please??

The box on my 440 does a lot of whining too, is there a lot of play in the gear stick?

I'd try changing/checking your gearbox oil if it's not been done for a while 1st Suddy. Output shaft or thrust bearing is the normal culprit though.

Whinning in the gearbox is normally followed by a rustle in the wallet so I'd check it out asa amigo :scared:

lol, yep, when your rwd diff decides to lockup, but your gearbox wants to keep going there's only going to be loosers. Never seen a complete gearbox casing shear in half before and throw the contents out the sides at 120. Was pretty scary! :scared:

Bad news Suddy. If you need a hand, drop me a line, have swapped a few boxes before (abiet never a Volvo luckily!).

Well the 440 isn't slipping any of its gears so looks like I can go on for a little longer

well the 2nd hand salvo box is in..

it had been whining (slightly- nothing like before) since i got it, in 2nd and 3rd, so today i dropped the gear oil and filled it with the £40 volvo stuff.

the stuff that came out was like paint, not full of big metal filings, but it had a metallic tinge to it.

do you reckon its time for a recon box this time, or just put up with it till i get a turbo?

does anyone elses m60 whine?

I remember Ally saying that his 2.0 seemed to have a bit of gearbox whine and that was quite some time ago- to the best of my knowledge it is still fine.

Maybe its a common thing?

Mine's passed whining, now it howls

It's never jumped out of gear and it selects all fine so I'm not too worried about it, gonna change the oil and see if it quietens down a bit

Thats what I need to do with the 440, in time for winter anyway. Mine is still only making a slight noise and doesn't pop out of gear but there is a hell of a lot of play in the gear stick, thought the gearboxes were supposed to be pretty tight
