Both manual and automatic transmission are discussed here, including the clutch!

newbie with a slipping clutch

Post by chris-durham » Fri Aug 18, 2006 8:41 pm

Hi all,

ive just bought myself a 1990 480 Turbo, which has quite a badly slipping clutch, eg each time it comes on boost the clutch slips and the revs go right up.

So ive set about getting the box out, but it seems to be a bit of a nightmare in comparrison to the clutch i changes on a 2.0 S40.

Take the engine out, it will be much easier, trust me.

If you really go for it:
Time to get engine out, 2 hours (done it a lot)
Time to whip of box and change clutch, 1 hr at most really, time to refit engine, allow 4 for arseing about.

Time to get box out with engine in car.....1 day
time to get box back in again. about the same.

ive kind of committed to leaving the engine in.... thought it would be less hastle as ive not got a hoist..

The driveshafts and stuff are out,

i think its just the mounts to go. Oh and the started motor, which i cant see where the bolts are for it.

I read somthing about lowering the subframe?

You will need some method or supporting the engine with only one mount holding it.... from the point you are at now it sounds as thogh you could still whip it out if you hired a hoist. I would recommend it if you can
You would need to replace the exhaust gasket......

You do need to lower the subframe, a damn sight more than hanes says... right off the bolts on that side, and then its still tight.

Easy way! You have to support the g/box this way IMHO.
