Is my clutch on the way out.
I've been noticing that sometimes the 2nd gear just will not engage, and also the first gear can be a bit stiff... is this a sign that my clutch could be going????

no, it's never jumped out of gear, but there is some movement of the stick backwards on accelerating, which is a bit unusual... could be the busted rear engine mount causing that tho?

That also sounds like the problem I had. I reckon it's the same thing.
I found that my 5th gear synchro had worn and eventually died. 5th gear is right on the end of the gearbox and can be accessed by removing the cover under the wheel arch.
My theory was that either the nut worked loose initially, causing the synchro to wear, or the other way around, the synchro was worn, causing a space on the shaft which caused the nut to work loose.... Either way, this meant that when gears were selected (may have just been 5th) the gear stick would fight rearwards, caused by the selector fork being able to slide slightly up and down this shaft. Makes sense in my head but if you haven't seen it it's hard to explain!
Anyway, I replaced the synchro ring, tightened everything up, re-filled the oil and it was fine...

Cool... well, I might be able to get at it once I've drilled out all the fused screws in the wheel arch covers *sigh*pol wrote:5th gear is right on the end of the gearbox and can be accessed by removing the cover under the wheel arch.
Cheers. I will look into this one,

You don't need to remove the main wheelarch liners, but there is a smaller rectangular plastic cover that is held in by 2 screws I think.
Behind thaty you see the black 5th gear cover. Drain the gearbox oil, then remove the 3 bolts securing the cover..... Ang on, someone has this pic as an avatar...
just checking.....
Aaaah, alfonzobonzo has it...
This is what is behind the cover...
You see the top left nut, that is what had worked loose. The selector fork slides a toothed ring around 2 gears to engage them.
Worth a look before you go removing any gearboxes.
I guess it's worth checking the clutch cable adjustment first.
