clutch bite point

Post by rivercar » Sat Apr 02, 2005 4:01 pm

i have to push my clutch right to the floor in order for me to change gears smoothly. is this normal? if not i think my thrust bearing might be going? could it be something else? i have a 1990 turbo. if it is the thrust bearing how much does this cost to fix?

regards
rivercar

I think you need to adjust the clutch cable at the gearbox end. Unlock the lock nut and tighten the inner 10mm nut on the end of the cable, depending on how much slack you need to take up, four to five revolutions should do the trick and retighten the locking nut against it.

Good luck...

Clutch adjustment

Post by 1900sr » Sat Jun 04, 2005 9:45 pm

I've got one car with the same problem as Rivercar, and another that is biting high and slipping. Which way should I turn the adjuster on each cable (anti-clockwise or clockwise)?

@1900sr - the one thats biting high & slipping could be over adjusted, turn the nut anti-clockwise to loosen off the cable, but it could also be that the clutch has gone

@Rivercar - if the bearing is on its way out it will make noise whenever you depress the clutch pedal

If the pedal has to go all the way to the floor to change gear turn the adjuster clockwise to tighten the cable

Hope that helps

I think your index finger may be a bit loose...

Clamp the clutch/c itself and turn the 10mm nut clockwise 1 to 2 revolutions and then try to get gear while sitting in the car. You can fix it to your own adjustment or what ever you feel comfortable with.

If not, you may need a replacement cable or pedal as i discovered when my pedal became malable due to the cable seizing. I got a new pedal and cable from a 1995 460.......now it's so light my toes hit the sump when I change gear :D

Thanks for that J, I'll have a go as soon as I get chance. Got a feeling my "spares" car might end up back on the road yet!
