Everything replaced but clutch slipping still worse than ever

Post by Themasteryeti » Fri Sep 26, 2025 4:42 pm

Okay guys I'm having a major issue, I've had a clutch slipping issue for quite a while now and it got to the point where I couldn't even drive it 15minutes to work, I originally got a new clutch and fitted that, still slipped, so I got a new clutch cable and it still slipped, so now I've resurfaced the flywheel and fitted yet another clutch and it still slips badly

It only slipped a bit yesterday but I did get the clutch cable adjustment, so I got my wife to press the clutch pedal for me this morning to adjust it as I had it set to the short fork adjustment of 22mm I think it was, so I've set it to 30mm as it says in the Haynes and the drive to work was fine but on the way home it was slipping so badly I had to slowly crawl down the road

I'm actually stumped, I don't know what's causing this, I've changed everything to do with it and it's still slipping to the point I can barely even use the car, I don't know what else to do, I'm honestly going to have to consider getting rid of it and buying a different car if I can't fix the issue

Is the clutch fork in a state of free play at rest or is the release bearing dragging?

When tightening the perimeter bolts of the pressure plate down, how much “pull down” is there after they were finger tight? Trying to gauge how much pressure the pressure plate is actually giving.

Did you buy the same brand of economy clutch to the one that failed?

Sorry to hear about your problems. I know how soul destroying this is pulling a gearbox each time.

No drag on the fork

&& The arms of the pressure plate moved quite a bit so id say it's definitely got a decent amount of pressure

& I did buy the same clutch but I think I can rule that out as the issue as I was getting my the slipping issue before I changed it the first time around

&& The worst part is not being able to drive the car, luckily this time round my work kindly lent me a van to use for a few weeks while I got it all sorted which I've now gave back 😩 so I'm still going to have to try use the Volvo to get to work and back and I worry I'm just going to ruin this new clutch and bigger the flywheel after getting it resurfaced 😩

Well unfortunately nothing has been eliminated if you bought the same clutch from probably the same manufacturing batch.

The old clutch could have been slipping because it was simply worn out. The new clutch(es) could be slipping because they are £10 friction plates.

Continued slipping will polish your newly surfaced flywheel.

How was the flywheel finished by the way? I don’t think they can be spun on a lathe, I think they have to be ground so they make a non-directional finish. Bit like how a cylinder wall is honed.
