Re: Volvo 480 Turbo, Gear change problem.
Often linked to either wrong gear box oil or worn selector linkage. These should be still available as a part for a Renault Clio

Thank you, the guys just used some ATF oil, I think not the correct one. Linkage is a gearbox out ?jamescarruthers wrote: ↑Sun Apr 07, 2024 5:34 pmOften linked to either wrong gear box oil or worn selector linkage. These should be still available as a part for a Renault Clio

Re: Volvo 480 Turbo, Gear change problem.
Ah, the car has an automatic gearbox? It must used Dexron II specification in that case. What did they put in?
Ignore what I said about linkage being worn.
There is also a kickdown cable on the automatic which can be set up right/wrong.

Re: Volvo 480 Turbo, Gear change problem.
Looks like a manual to me as it has a shift rod.
In which case, ATF not ideal.

Ah, there is a picture! Not showing up for me. Agreed, no way ATF should be in the manual box!

Re: Volvo 480 Turbo, Gear change problem.
In my '95 480ES with b20F and manual I used to use original Volvo gearbox oil, which is a tad expensive. I recently switched over to a cheaper but also great option, "Kroon SP Gear 5015 GL-4". Make sure the oil you use for your gearbox is a GL-4 and NOT a GL-5.

Yes, indeed, Emanuel ) Can be the oil my culprit? I'm going to give it a go, if not, the linkage bushing is a gearbox out work, and if u have a good day, can I have the part numbers ? )

Re: Volvo 480 Turbo, Gear change problem.
Manual Gearbox oil :
GL4 ONLY
75W80
Elf NFP (or equivalent).
The bush kit (at gearbox end) :
Gearbox does not have to be removed. It is purely rod based.
Unlikely the bushes alone prevent gear selection. They may create gearshift play or vagueness, but not a total selection failure.
Note that the selection rod is adjustable for both angle and throw. This could affect gear selection. However, if its unchanged from factory, its unlikely to have changed. If it has moved, or has come loose, there are specific measurements in the "Haynes book of lies" on how to adjust - but i'd say just play with adjustment until it works.
From what I can fathom, you are running ATF in a manual box, so rectify that first!

aye I'd suggest a quick oil change, ATF is thin so that would seem the 'reverse problem'Jay-Kay-Em wrote: ↑Wed Apr 10, 2024 7:55 amManual Gearbox oil :

ie most gearboxes as are tad 'sticky' if oil is thicker?
I put EP80 into the SS1 and it transpires that it should be ATF, and there is NOT a drain plug, hence issues when COLD.....

Re: Volvo 480 Turbo, Gear change problem.
Yes, good point Alan, I should say running ATF in a manual box not designed for it!
My Griffith had the manual box from the Rover SD1 and that was specified ATF in a manual - beautiful gearchanges and never an issue for what it was designed for.
Gear box oil is the ultimate compromise. You want loads of friction for the synchro's to bite, but as little friction as possible for wear.

Re: Volvo 480 Turbo, Gear change problem.
If its a manual box you need ELF, tranself NFX, SAE 75W
This oil made specifically for these boxes, something to do with the brass/bronze parts in the box.
I put this in my 92 480es 1.7 and boy what a difference in the shift quality, its so smooth now

Cheers Mate Thanks guys, Gearbox oil ordered.
The bushing comes there (marked)? Or on the stick side? On the stick the gearbox feels awesome, not loose nor play, it's firm. On the picture, looks like something broken, but I can't find any original picture from the linkage, only mine what is broken.

I got the gear selector thingy.

Thanks!
I hope I don't need to replace the rubber on the nut, I can't find the part.

I 'think' that the rubber thingy is an 'option' mine is well past it best by date and was only a dust cover (or collector)threepointsix wrote: ↑Fri Apr 12, 2024 9:13 amI got the gear selector thingy.
