Both manual and automatic transmission are discussed here, including the clutch!

1995 celebration gearbox

Post by Dennis Stranack » Fri Aug 27, 2021 4:11 pm

Hi

I have owned my celeb for 8 years but unfortunately the gearbox has just given up !!

She is a 1995
engine B20F
Gearbox code M60373E

I have searched every where in the UK and the Netherlands plus ebay all with no luck

Can any club member help me in either finding a box or even selling me a used box
Also any info on which box from a 4 series would fit my 480 would be a possible help
I know the box code must finish E, I believe for the electronics to work

Any help / advise would be appreciated
If all else fails i will need to consider finding a gearbox rebuild garage but will see what the great members of the Volvo 480 Club Europe can come up with first

Dennis

Thought the gearboxes were pretty bulletproof? Or did all the oil fall out? What’s wrong with it?

I’m saying this because recently my sister’s car had its gearbox condemned by a garage and the RAC man but actually the clutch had let go.

Hi to you both and thanks for your replies

Blace
Thanks for your offer, if the box is the correct one and you want to sell i am prepared to purchase and also pay any shipping from you to me
here in Poole, Dorset, BH15 4EF YOU CAN PM me with any further details

James
Gearbox IS VERY noisy in 1st, 2nd, and 4th Gears but is OK in 3rd ans 5th

Clutch is OK as only replace 9 months ago and my garage has driven and confirmed it is a gearbox problem

I was considering to get the box rebuilt so this is my last chance of finding a box and perhaps save a few £££

Thanks again

Dennis

Sadly I think you are quite limited in getting one from another 480 as the majority of 440/460 were built have the cable driven speedometer.

Does anyone know of the drive can be swapped over between boxes? This would open the market considerably!

There are a lot of 440 and 460 at Lake’s Autos being broken in Bedfordshire but only a few 480s and I think these are early ones with the slightly different ratio boxes. You never know though, they may have one removed from a car years ago stashed away that would suit your Celebration.

I might be able to help with this.

I will check the box and let you know what the code is.
