info centre,,,,, help!!!!!

From CEM to VEM, from LED to lightbulb and more. If you have an electrical problem, like a broken info-centre, search for answers in this category. This is also the place to be when you expect the problem to be of an electrical nature...

Post by ryper » Tue Jan 24, 2006 5:58 pm

hey everyone, seems i only get on here once in a blue moon... anyway, i have jus had my info centre stop dead and cant find the reason why..... i was trying to put a CD player into the car , when i turned on the cd player it worked for about ten seconds then stopped dead (trapping my doors cd.... :( ) and evidently knocking the info centre off..... Ive checked the bulb behind the display but thats fine.... and went through all the fuses (as im not sure which is for the info unit) and again couldn't find any problems ...so now i need help from one of you pro's!!!! if anybody is clear on this then let me know!!!! later peoples!!

Hi all

ryper i just sorted my dash from sqeeking and installed my cd player from my 340 and have had no problems yet.
sorry to hear of your prob,i had a fair share of those info probs(run a search:)

if you have checked the halogen then thats cool(do you get illumination and no digits???)

fuses you checked (replace any fuses that have a discolour around the little silver bridge)

unplug main info clock(two plugs at rear)and try plugging in again.

check you didnt knock the info selector cable out(grey thin one)

not sure what else to try(check fuses hanging on blck plugs under the dash above the pedals right side.(maybe worth a look)

other than that is there any other details like any lights that worked and dont now??(brake light sybol etc)

some sort of big brown wire runs behind the din slot for stereos.....its for the IC in some way....if youve disturbed/trapped/split or whatever,it can cause IC probs dude.......

Hi Ryan. Can’t really help there but when mine went dead along with the radio I found out it was the fuse, I know you have checked this already but I missed it first time round. Is the fag lighter still working? The info centre, radio and fag lighter all work of the same fuse

from my experience...it does sound like a fuse to me,

ciggy lighter, infocentre and in-car wireless is all protected by the same fuse.

No. 20 something if i remember correctly...

Not good with alot of mechanical but check the dimmer switch under the steering wheel. When mine blanked it had burnt the switch out. I just replaced it and all was good. Mine also fried while messing with a CD player.

WOW!! i just came on to add the exact same post!

I put my new head unit in yesterday and it worked fine. I then switched off the cd player to slide it into place. Tried to switch it on again and KAZAM!! Nothing!

My info centre illuminates but no info is displayed. Also, my interior clock stopped, the glovebox light & keyhole lights are not working, and the cig lighter is also a non-starter!! Obviously my first port of call was the fuse box ... but when i realised they were all dandy, my frustration levels soared and i clearly needed assitance...

Murf (many thanks) confirms the fuses are fine (not blown), however, there is no power actually getting to the relative fuses with all the above on?!?!? Infact, these problems cover TWO fuses (fuses 21 & 22 on my 95 GT)!! So what next?! Are there more fuses somewhere other than the fuse box? Like a trip switch you'd get in a house?

Stay strong and hopefully we can get through this 'ryper' ... it's just the 480 testing our faith!

the dimmer switch still works and will adjust the illumination of the info centre, but still no digits!

Just spent the afternoon sorting out my dead ic. On my car, the main power feed for the ic was looped into the original stereo plug (two wires into one terminal). The previous owner had chopped this about to fit his stereo, and cut the live feed to the ic. I re-made this connection and all was fine.

Bump for Ross, any further ideas before we rip his dash out??

theres no power feeding the fuses in the fusebox but only the fuses for the IC,clock and radio!
is there a main fuse that feeds these or some kind of connector that could be damaged/fried?

Just to jump on the back of this - my water temperature gauge on the IC always reads COLD these days - my thought is the sensor in the rad (or wherever it reads from).

Anyone had/done this plse?

Stu.

Engine temp is normally measured by the water coolant temperature is what I meant Mart, although being a Volvo wouldn't suprise me if uses something else.

Will pinch one off a scrappy 480 when I head over the weekend and swap and check, cheers amigo.

You can always find a job with a 480 huh!

I'm not 100% sure at this moment, but I was just about to post a question about this, as it looks like it is exactly what happened in my car: Why on earth would the IC be wired through the stereo unit? A friend and I put in my Pioneer cd changer and head unit yesterday and after all was said and done, there was one grey sleeved wire left dangling and we had no idea what it was for. As we were working on the stereo, we were thinking and looking in that direction and never thought to check anything else. As I drove off today I noticed the IC was all lit up, but not displaying any info. All fuses look fine and all the lights in the dash are still functional. And since it stopped working, all that changed is that wire hanging there not being connected. Will connect the wire tomorrow and report back if anyone's still interested :)

Anyways, I guess my question is answered and it's not standard for the IC to be wired through the stereo.

hi stu,

it is the water temp that u measure, but the sensor is in the block, at the back of the engine, just under the manifold.
stand at the front of your car and look to the back and the right hand side....locate the coil on the bulk head....from behind this comes a single black wire....that should be attached to a single spade terminal just opposite the coil, on the block, just under the manifold as stated above.
the wire tends to be short, and snaps quite easily, also people take it off if theyre fiddling down the back of the block and forget to put it on.
the sensor itself is very rarely at fault....it will be something to do with the wiring, im sure
