You interfered with the sacred band of electrics that is the lights!

Did you replace with the right kind of bulb? Even 1w difference will cause the popups to stay down. Switch the electrics on and pull the bulb with it on (and popup switch to up) - do the lights pop up again? If so, you need to make sure the bulb is right. If it is, it's worth replacing the opposite side at the same time, in case theres a difference too great for the poor car. Also clean all the contacts of the holders - a bad contact often causes this.

That'll do for first suggestions :)

It's supposed to be double contact bulb (like a brake light). Both filaments are on when the headlights (pop-ups)are off, and only the dim filament is on when the headlights (pop-ups) are on!

but check the other side in case that isnt etc

Also be aware that there are 2 versions of the running lights - the old ones use a low wattage, and the new ones (generally for the clear running lamps) run a higher wattage - the lower value was 4w for old and 5w for new I think... but there's definately 2 different ones...

I've had this as well when changing one of the bulbs. The bulbs I use are the stop/tail lamps from a Ford Sierra. Embarrassing to order from the local motor factors, but they've worked in all the 480's I've owned.

If your lights are stuck down you'll have to manually raise them, using the knob on the back of the lights, near inner wing on both sides. As someone said it's worth checking the bonnet switch as well, it's under the little round hole that locks the bonnet.

Good luck getting them working again.

THANKS,

I just had this exact problem and for the same reasons...all working now..thanks to this forum!!! Got my side lights as both 5watts, they are both burning brighter since I cleaned the contacts up.

I also changed my main beam bulbs for some Halfords extra bright jobbies...excellent improvement.

Bloody left side light has gone out..most likely a bad connection...if only it were a 2 minute task...what will the neighbours think???..he can't even change a light bulb without dismantling half the car!!!!

Re comment from Ben about the side lights becoming duller with with main beams on, change the sidelights to 5w Brake lights, they remain bright all the time!!!

Ok, what I have found.

Changing the side lights to from 4w to 5w causes the lights to remain bright wgen the pop-ups are up. ALSO it means that when your Pop-ups are down the Warning light (for broken bulbs) stays on in....it goes offf when you put pop ups up.

FINALLY - where the hell do you get 4w bulbs from, too car stores - no 4w bulbs, just 5w!!!

I am unsure if the 5w bulbs may cause any damage, anyone anything that might help me??

Cheers in advance

When I replaced mine, I just took them to a nearby car odds and ends shop (Kind of like Halfords, but cheaper!), just down the road and he looked at the profile of the connector and went through a collection of bulbs he had until he had the right ones. Unforturnatly, I wasn't living in Cambs at the time, so it wasn't somewhere near you Steve, I was at uni in Coventry and that might be quite a long way to go, just to get some bulbs! :D

I assume Volvo themselves will be able to supply you with the rights ones. They might cost slightly more than a local car-parts shop, but at least you'll know that they're correct! Here are the part numbers for you:
  • 965828 : 5W
    343003 : 4/21W
