Gauges under the radio
My '93 480 doesn't have the 2 (3 for a turbo) gauges under the radio. I think I can get the gauges and panel housing from a breakers. I'm ok with wiring up the volt meter but where is the oil pressure gauge connected? I'm assuming it'll be near the oil filter. Will I need to fit a sender or do I simply hook it up to the existing sender?

If memory serves me correctly Coyote1980 has gone that road before. Suppose the corresponding thread is still somewhere on the old EZ board.

You need to get a different sensor. If my memory serves my right the standard one only has 2 wires, where as the one you are searching for is a sensor with 3 wires.
I also got mine from a scrappy, need to fit (after over a year) the "new" sensor...
You should be able to connect the voltage meter immediatly.
Good luck with your search...

I have a set for the ES (2 dials) and I think the connector is 4pin? If you want to have it i'll sell for 5ukp for uk.

More info
OK thanks everyone for the replies. I now need more info on this. I'm assuming then my current setup, with just a 'low oil pressure' light simply uses an oil pressure SWITCH i.e. high pressure = switch off. Low pressure = switch and dash light on. Whereas the 480's fitted with an oil pressure dial use a sender that is effectively a variable resistance transducer. Has anyone traced these various wires from the oil sender to find out where they go?

Hi.
When I installed my turbo engine I got the panel with the 3 gauges in it, I had nothing before there. Just a little "lay-away" box. Behind the box there is 4 wires in a green plug. I don't know about your car but al the signals was in my plug, I just installed the panel and it worked. You shall probably install the presure sensor in the engine, it is located at the front of the engine allmost at the bottom in the middle. The wires is probably allready there.

when I got my old car, it did not have the guages, but it did have the necessary sensor, so don't spend your money on that untill you know for sure

In the electrical schemes in the downloadsection of the website, it is clear which signals should be present. When no oil-pressure sender is present, it will read full pressure. I checked the connections of the gauges by playing with a battery charger and connecting it to the right pins on the gauges-unit. When opening this unit, it is clear which connection is the mass (brown wire), which is for the lights, which is for the oil-pressure en which is for the volt-meter. In my car the connector didn't fit the unit (connector and gauges are not counterparts), so I had to improvise, but after some measurements I succeeded.
The wire in the engine bay, which should be connected to the oil-pressure sender (which I had to install myself), was not present, so I have an own wire from the engine bay to the back of the gauges. By the way, I use just one connection on the pressure sender, the other one is for the pressure warning light. Because my sender is located at the back of the engine, I didn't have to remove the old switch for the warning light and therefore I decided to leave that one connected. That's why I only needed one connection of the pressure sender.

Hi again, i would be most gratefull if someone could guide me step by step to make the oil pressure gauge work.I have the gauges ,the 4pin under the radio. My car didn't have the oil sender so i bought that.It came with a fuse which leads to 2 wires.I am supposed to put the oil sender where the sensor in the engine (for the light in my dash is), right?Question.Where do the two wires from the oil sender go,what happens to the wires from the previous sensor and the 4 pin in the dash stays as is?Sorry for the trouble but i would like to take a try at it and not pay an electrician.Cheers.

Sounds like the voltage isn't being regulated properly, since the red zone is overcharging the battery - you say it only sometimes goes into the red... like when (i.e. always when acellerating hard etc?)

Guages under the radio - battery overcharging
An overcharging alternator can 'cook' your battery. I had to shell out for both a new alternator and a new battery when this happened to me.
No battery guage so I didn't know it was happening. If it's going into the red it's a warning.
