Fixing means...making things worse

Post by MisterT » Sat Nov 29, 2003 5:33 pm

I've been working on my 480 all day:
- cleaning the dashboard
- cleaning the ground points (three of them)

For the purpose of making the dashboard electronic work correct again. The main result: the battery is dead.

The problem is that we've tried to start the car with starter cables and it should start and run idle when it is started, but it won't. If the starter cables are disconnected, the engine dies and the battery runs flat within 5 seconds.

Although I am planning to run by the dealer for this, I was wondering how it can be that the car won't run idle. Does it mean there's are short somewhere, or bad ground or...?

It could be a lot of things I know, but the things I've done are no major power thing I thought.

Anyone have any ideas. If not, the dealer can have it :-)

Hi Mister T,

Had a young chap living near me with similar problem. It pointed to one of three things as far as I could see

1. As Volvofox says the battery is either U/S or needs a good charge
2. Alternator has had it and no longer charging the battery
3. Relay problem

Young chap mentioned had number 3 as his problem. Turned out someone had totally rewired the relay panel and messed things up.

I am sure there are other possibilities but these three are good to get you started and in that order I would suggest.

Regards

Chris

I had to replace the regulator on the alternator of my old 480, fixed it.

Wow, thnx for the replies! I'll try the suggested options, but it still has to go to the dealer (APK - yearly safety check)

I really don't know what I could have done to drain the battery, because I only cleaned the dashboard and the ground points and started the car two times. I thought nothing I worked on uses some many power to drain battery...

Ah well, learning is falling and rising :-)

The final solution: a new cable between the alternator (dynamo?) and the battery...

Someday I find these problems myself.
