over charging

From CEM to VEM, from LED to lightbulb and more. If you have an electrical problem, like a broken info-centre, search for answers in this category. This is also the place to be when you expect the problem to be of an electrical nature...

whats overcharging? I mean measure the voltage ?

best is to deal with this right away.

If it realy is to much (call the workshopchef at the volvo garage how much is to much, I don't know the exact specs..

If it is to much this is not expensive: Leave the alternator on the car, just undo the screws on the back (mark where what cable went) after you undid the battery clamb, and take the backpart of the alternator of. It consists of some structure, with the brushes on, but more important a aluminum little box like structure with behind some resin, or hotmelt the part you need, the AC-DC converter and voltage regulator.

It had cost me like 50 guilders (25 euro's) to buy a new one, a fraction of a new or reconditioned alternator.

Best is to take the thing with you to the shop, and some alternator specs and data. Go to a well equipped carpartsshop.

succes

Like Volvofox writes,

might be just the voltageregulator. If you buy a replacement one make sure it's a Volvo spec. and not a Renault spec.
If the copper axle is all 'grooved' up you're in for a alternator replacement I'am afraid.

if it is really to much, a too high voltage can ruin all the cars electronics.... so be carefull

I repaired yellow 480, which just was sold to a friendly fellow dutchman of marrocan origin, that failed to load, because one wire of the e-pack on the back of the alternator was melted bare to the plus or body. We were very lucky everything worked OK after isolating this wire. The new owner got really nervous his new car broke down the first day, so we helped him.
