ECU beeps @ different volumes at startup????

From CEM to VEM, from LED to lightbulb and more. If you have an electrical problem, like a broken info-centre, search for answers in this category. This is also the place to be when you expect the problem to be of an electrical nature...

ECU beeps @ different volumes at startup????

Post by johnd » Fri Nov 14, 2003 12:01 pm

You know the five or so beeps the ECU gives when you startup.....well sometimes mines beeps fine, sometimes I can only just hear it, sometimes none at all.

Anyone else had this/know remedy?

Cheers

John

Hi,

It's a 94. I used to have a 91 ES that never beeped. I know these definitely beep on startup but I'm just bemused by the volume differences

Cheers

There is a 'beep' when you hold down the rear demister button for a few seconds, on all 480's. This could indicate a short-circuit,

P.S checked the wires yet?

The 480 will beep 5 or 6 times when you turn the ignition if your seatbelt isn't plugged in (and assuming your pressure sensor in your seat works) - to the non beeping people, does your seatbelt-not-plugged-in light come on when you dont have the belt plugged in? If not then thats why you have no beep :)

Mine present one beeps ('93 car) but my previous 2 didn't ('87 and '92). If I remember, the seatbelt light on those flashed whenever a seat was in use but the seatbelt wasn't.

the Beep comes from the CEM, not the ECU. Maybe you connected the two contoller connectoprs to the control mode, and you are actually doing (whats left over/or part of the test mode??????)
Maybe else your CEM is getting senile.

This in the worst case. In any other it could be the belt warning, as I understand now some new 480 owners have.

my car (95 celeb) also has a goold old beep at me if i don't put my seatbelt on the instant i turn the ignition on, and i also get the problem where occasionally the beeping is hardly audible....

it also affects the beeping when the indicators are on

Well I had a failing CEM which started with demist problems... But since you had beeps prior to your problems I don't have a clue what problem might be, sorry. :(
In any case I hope it isn't your CEM, cause that isn't cheap...

My demist has stopped working 'cos of a dodgy CEM (or so the Volvo mechanic told me). They cleaned up the connections and it worked again, but they said I would need a new one if it went again. Which it did. Yesterday. Is it easier just to live without a heated rear window then?

Strange ... the volume of the beeps is getting lower and lower...
A few months ago I could easily hear them (even annoying when using the direction indicator...), but now I can hardly hear the beeps.

I also have the impression that there is more than one beeper, since I hear beeps at different frequencies (am I correct?)

I hear beeps when:
- using the direction indicator
- switching off the engine
- leaving the pop-ups up when switching off the engine and taking uot the key
