Ignition coil references, equivalents B18FT 1991

From CEM to VEM, from LED to lightbulb and more. If you have an electrical problem, like a broken info-centre, search for answers in this category. This is also the place to be when you expect the problem to be of an electrical nature...

Ignition coil references, equivalents B18FT 1991

Post by balto8 » Sun Feb 18, 2024 9:00 pm

Hi all
Been a while since I posted here last time.
Need help for a suitable ignition coil. Been experiencing cold start issues. Old story for most of you.
Yes, new plugs, crank sensor fine, temp sensors fine, new coil regulator, new rotor....rebuilt engine with 2000 kms from there.

Any certain reference that has worked for you?

Has the old coil still got its Bosch sticker and part number?

Autodoc has an incredible search function if you can find the above.

I don’t think the coil is that special… will anything 12v do just to temporarily prove / disprove your theory?

The sticker is long gone, also you never know if it is the original.
It's a Bosch, other than that no legible number.
I tried 12V ones, doesn't seem to improve things.

My 1994 Turbo coil is stamped 0 221 600 066

Image

Both the Bosch catalogue and the Volvo parts book has the coil and ignition module combined "as one" under that part number.

(13)

Image

That makes it extremely hard to cross reference just the coil due to the combination of the two items as-one.

I still believe any similar Bosch coil will slide into the bracket though. Ebay has plenty of visually identical items for Vauxhalls, Mercedes etc.

Hasn't that answered your own question then, that you've eliminated the coil?

Yes references are a complete mess as when you Google the Volvo number you get most results for the regulator.
I'm not an electrician but being 12V is not a guarantee for a coil to be a perfect fit. Mostly when starting up the car. Other parameters I am not familiar with also count, maybe anyone can enlight me.

Cold start. Last weekend new BPR7ES plugs improved things somehow, but still have to crank the thing for 5-7 seconds before it idles it's way to stable, excuse my English.
Will try ZGR5B as they will be delivered next week, but don't think that should make much of a difference.
It isn't a big deal, but I would love it coming to life at the touch of the key.
Gas is pumping right and I get a fuel smell every cold start.
The engine has been done from scratch and the thing pulls like a train other than that.
Is the 480 coil 12 or 14V?

do you know that all 400 series do a few "empty" rotations to build up oil pressure and then start?

A 12v coil is a turn of phrase - they will have an operating window just like a 12v bulb...... 10 to 14.7v usually.

"In the old days" you used to get 9v coils for a 12v car and they ran with a ballast resistor. Normal operation they run through the resistor, but upon cranking they bypass the resistor, thus giving the coil some extra thump when needed most (cranking). I have checked the wiring diagram and no such resistor exist.

Measure across the primary posts.. what's the voltage?

There's nothing complicated in a coil. Its just windings in oil.

Here's the coil from my similar aged 968...

Image

I can't see it being any different and eBay is literally littered with them for similar German marques.

If you have fitted other coils, and its exactly the same, then coils must be eliminated!

If you have poor battery earths, poor battery or any other poor grounds, sometimes the volts drop to 9v cranking and there isn't enough juice to either run the coil, power ECU's or power the ignition transistor.

As a side note, every single Turbo I have encountered does have extended cranking anyway. The cynic in me says that's Volvo being over cautious (again) and wanting oil up to the turbo with a programmed delay in the EZ210K. It's more like 3 seconds though.

Quoting myself here

That coil did make a difference. Not a big one, but it did.
Now I have to crank for 2 secs before it comes to life, and it doesn't stall.
Will report further though.

Glad a stock Bosch item made a difference.

2 seconds about normal for a Turbo I think. Every time I start mine there's always a doubt if it will !
