SRS Light won't go out

From CEM to VEM, from LED to lightbulb and more. If you have an electrical problem, like a broken info-centre, search for answers in this category. This is also the place to be when you expect the problem to be of an electrical nature...

SRS Light won't go out

Post by suddy » Thu Jun 15, 2023 10:06 am

Morning,

My SRS light had been flickering for some weeks prior to being permanently on, which is the state as of now.

I followed the well documented (viewtopic.php?f=8&t=19326&p=168246&hili ... de#p168246) instructions to read the fault code which came up with 1-2-7 SRS warning lamp: open circuit or short-circuit

I took the instrument panel out and found that the two pin connector had dry joints which I re-soldered nicely.

I then erased the code as per the instructions and the readout now is 1-1-1, I ran the engine for a couple of minutes but the SRS light is still on.

I repeated the erase procedure a couple of times, and repeatedly the readout is 1-1-1.

Should I take my car for a longer drive?
Are there any connectors between the instrument panel and crash sensor which I could have missed?

I wondered if anyone had similar experiences and could share some ideas?

Thanks and Kind Regards,
Stephen

Has the steering wheel been off at any point?
The clock spring behind the wheel would be my first thought as a trouble spot, as they’re easily damaged if not refitted properly

Hello,

I have had the steering wheel off a few times during my ownership, but I have always been _very_ careful when replacing. That's not to say it's not the problem this time, but I have a mind that if the steering wheel was at fault the error codes would be along the lines of:
2-1-1 Steering wheel module: short-circuit in wiring
2-1-2 Steering wheel module: open circuit in wiring
2-1-3 Steering wheel module: short-circuit to the ground
2-1-4 Steering wheel module: short-circuit to +12V

In the meantime, I have found that there is an additional connector between the crash sensor and instrument panel (it's under the cigarette lighter console), so I've disconnected that and cleaned it.

According to the wiring guide; the SRS light is earthed at the left side A pillar, which was also taken out, cleaned as best as I could and put back - additionally I had to take the CEM out to get to that, so I also gave those connections a clean (I don't think CEM has anything to do with the SRS system though).

So I'm baffled.

just pull the bulb! :hopping:

If it doesn't light nobody will ever know at MoT unless they are REALLY super knowledge about 480

That's what I did, and it worked

Morning, I would like to share an update since I have got it working.

Long story short, I removed the SRS bulb whilst it was lit (ignition on II), then put it back - and it went out. Now it does the usual light for 10 seconds, then off. Tested a few times most recently just now.
Error code still reads 1-1-1.

There must be a logical explanation for that behaviour, but I suppose it's pointless to investigate why, as long as it works.

Thanks for the replies.

you want a 'logical' explanation for 480 electronics

One further update since the problem happened again since my last post.

I had a hunch that the dash light was at fault. This time I tested the signal coming from the crash sensor at the point of first switching to ignition position II. There is a voltage just less than 9v, which dropped to ~1.5v after 10seconds, which to me says the crash sensor was working the whole time.

On the instrument panel there a small circuit, a transistor (BC337), zener diode (ZY33) and some resistors. I replaced the transistor and diode and tested. So far it problem hasn't come back.

Fingers crossed.
