It is Alive!

Post by MisterH » Mon Dec 30, 2019 5:41 pm

Today, we finally fixed the speedo/odo on my car
Image

we were also able to adjust the brake light switch as well

What we had done as our first fix was to take the plug out in the engine bay and solder directly. we had mistakenly assumed that the shielding should be linked to the bodywork to earth it, however after reading Brinkie's advice that that shouldn't be done, after cutting it off, it burst into life.

took it out for a test drive this evening and all was fine (apart from nearly getting to know a Dear a little too well  )

many thanks to all who have put their two pence into this issue. now the only jobs that need doing are:

repair or source a radio/cassette unit
adjust pop-up positioning
bodywork
new digital clock
fix central locking
Current Jobs to do (23/1/22):
Fix Central Locking
Fix drivers side speaker
Annoying Scratching Squeak
Water leaks
Complete Front O/S rebuild

A most excellent (near) start to the new year!

I'd add checking the handbrake switch to that list too!

You were doing 30 with the door open and the handbrake on?

Great work! It is quite a thrill when it all springs back to life after years of being resolutely inert! My last but one 480 had the 'Full Brinkie' and was a joy to drive (especially in the dark) ever after.

Keep us posted with updates!

All the best for a 480 2020!

the car was stationary: the handbrake locks the back wheels, and the front left wheel was jacked up. when the car was put into gear, it caused the differential to send all the power to the free spinning wheel, thus tricking it into displaying a 30 mph signal, while the driver side front wheel remained unpowered
