Won't start

From CEM to VEM, from LED to lightbulb and more. If you have an electrical problem, like a broken info-centre, search for answers in this category. This is also the place to be when you expect the problem to be of an electrical nature...

Won't start

Post by ijw101 » Fri Oct 05, 2018 8:22 am

Hoping for some help🙏My '92 480 had been left for some time. When I recently purchased it the indicators didn't work or the ignition key wouldn't turn the engine. Led was constant and no central locking. Replaced CEM now that all works and led flashes goes off when doors are open. Turn ignition engine turns over but pump doesn't run. Now where I am at: Replaced ecu no difference the 2 relays for ignition and pump click when key is turned but took covers off and the contacts close but immediately open again. The coil connections have 12v on both sides ecu has 2 earth connections. Pump runs if I close the relay. Close both relays but still won't start seems like no spark as the engine just spins.

On some 480's the pump doesn't run until it detects a pulse from the crank sensor.

Look at that sensor first. Then tell us what engine you have (1.7 in '92). The MAP sensor (cheap and easy to change) was what stopped my project car starting at first. ‎

Forgot to mention it's a 1.7 basic no abs or airbag.
I can't get to look at it till Monday now, I think the resistance reading should be around 200ohms is that correct?

I'm sorry I don't know off the top of my head.

I think you should see the rev counter needle move a tiny bit as you crank the car if the sensor is working. However, this thinking took me down the wrong route because it turned out my rev counter was actually broken! So bear that in mind.‎

confirm that you do/don't have a spark coming FROM the HT unit !! I've seen teh rotor arm fail

I had a dicky connection next to flywheel which would prevent starting, pulled apart, cleaned and re-made

Well today I started my 480 and was pleased with the sound of the engine even though I have no back box.
The problem of no fuel pump relay switching, was the crank sensor, I then had no spark but that was the previous owner not connecting the coil pack correctly causing me a little bit of head scratching. Now for the rest of the jobs. Thanks for the help guys.

well at least it would have been a 'cheap' fix :-)

a running car is always worth keeping going, if it is not running it puts dampner on things :-(

mine used to kick in around high 80s / low 90s but don't have a leccy water pump. (93 two litre)

check the fan runs when you supply it with 12V, could be the switch or the fuse, or just STUCK (really cheap fix if you can get it to turn), my switch packed up years ago so fitted a 'Kenlowe' style one as it was sitting on the shelf form another car and even when swapped radiator I didn't fit a new switch (daft but was pleased to get a NOS radiator for buttons)

comes on now around mid 80s

The fan won't kick in until much later, and that is fine. On my old B18E (different to yours) the fan kicks in at about 105 deg. C. ‎

The electric auxiliary water pump is a different matter, that is triggered to come on at a lower temperature when the ignition is off to avoid hot spots in the engine.

Sorry, I am away and don't have my books to tell you the figures. But your car sounds like it is looking after its temperatures well‎

you mean 'will it run if I supply 12V?'
according to HBOL

ON 95 slow speed, 101 high speed
OFF 90 96

if it has the two stage switch, ie three wires (maybe mine did, can't remember )

Hmmmm, I wonder if I am missing the low stage or whether the earlier cars are different?

According to the Green Books the two speed fan was for cars with Air Con.

Book doesent give off temps but both turn on at "above 92C" and cars with A/C have second speed at "above 98C".

Mine has three wires to the radiator switch.
I don't have a back box for the exhaust so am not inclined to run it yet, but once I get the exhaust done I will look more into it.
