Re: Headlamp electric motor
Pages 50 and 51 in this document show the diagram for the headlight control circuit and the pinout for the connector. Based on that you could make up some test leads for the motor and/or get a meter on the connector on the car side to verify that voltage is present if that's causing suspicion as well.
An easier way to do it would be to connect it to a car and pull the cover off the pop-up relay (the tall one, labelled as item 3.0/relay position F on page 51) and manually close it, which will cause the motor to run continuously.

Re: Headlamp electric motor
I have built a complete test set-up for motors with original 480 parts, including a popup headlight assembly. But there is much a simpler way.
You need:
- a functioning Volvo 480 with charged battery
- a large screwdriver
- a motor to test (duh )
Open the bonnet and stick a screwdriver in the bonnet lock, so you can hear the microswitch click. This will circumvent the protection circuitry.
Disconnect the motor on the driver's side right at the motor (white round plug). Plug the motor under test in the connector.
Switch on ignition, switch on the light, switch the light off. If the motor goes bzzzzzzzzt without hesistation, the motor is OK.

Re: Headlamp electric motor
Sounds sweet , but I have no " functioning Volvo 480 with charged battery " , that car I bought for spares , smashed front section and wires like overcoocked spaghetti . Have also Green Books , but electicity is a black magic to me . That diagram shows 8 pins plug without information which is + and - . Having no battery , is a problem of buing a device which converts 230 V to 12 V / usable for other electric machines tests / . All skilled machanics I asked , said that 480 is a mistery , and don`t want to touch it . Brinkie , your test set is fine , but see no details I need . But thanks guys .

Re: Headlamp electric motor
If I'm home I will dig up the test set and tell you which wires are +12V and ground

If you don’t have a 12V supply you are going to have a problem but the MOTOR wires are
Ground - Pin 1 (Brown)
12V - pin 2 (Green)
If you have the paper version of the Green Book rather than the PDF of the book it does show which pins are which.
This is for 1991 as per the link Jaster posted I've not checked any other years.

Re: Headlamp electric motor
The only other wiring schemes on the main site that include the headlights are on page 54 of this document, and they have the same pinout for the motors (pins 30 and 30a on the relay feeding Gn-y and Gn, pin 2 on each motor).
The supplemental diagrams for '92 onward make no mention of the headlights, suggesting that nothing changed.
Malkontent - if you need a 12V power source then in the first instance I'd suggest having a look to see if you have any devices that use a 12V power brick that you could borrow. I don't know how much current the motors draw but I doubt that it's a huge amount.

Re: Headlamp electric motor
current might be around five amps!
looks similar in size to wiper motors and they are rated around 40 to 50Watts, and as DC it is a serious amperage at switch on!!

In that case, exercise caution!

Re: Headlamp electric motor
Jaster is correct on a 1991 the 12V will be either Green or Green/Yellow dependant on side, I didn't spot that.
However I have 4 books covering 86-90 and all say the opposite to the 91 book.
Ground - Pin 2 (Brown)
12V - pin 1 (Green or Green/Yellow)
I’ve just checked my 89 car and BOTH appear to be R/H motors from the 91 diagram for pins 1 and 2 but the other 3 pin colours don’t match any of my diagrams.
